Muriel Rosina Dobson
1919-2020
Muriel Rosina Mercer, 100, of
Lower Coverdale, peacefully passed away at home on Thursday, December
17, 2020, with her loving family by her
side.
Born in Salt Springs, New
Brunswick, she was the youngest daughter of Frederick Mercer and Mary
Augusta (Dempster) Mercer. She was the last surviving member of her
family.
She was predeceased by her
husband, Gordon Dobson.
She is survived by her
daughters, Sandra (Harry) Doyle, Peggy (the late Cameron) Maxwell,
Brenda Dobson and Pearl Anne (Stuart) Taylor. She is also survived by
eight grandchildren and several great
grandchildren.
At a young age her family moved
to Riverbank, New Brunswick. After high school Muriel attended the
Moncton Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated in 1941.
Shortly after her marriage, she cooked for 21 men in a lumber camp.
After raising her children to school age, she returned to her nursing
career at The Moncton Hospital Annex where she became a head nurse on
the Orthopedic Ward. When the Annex closed, she went to Halifax for
training in rehabilitation. On returning to Moncton, she set up the
first Rehabilitation Ward at The Moncton Hospital and became the Head
Nurse of the Unit.
Muriel was a devoted wife and
loving mother. She loved spending time with her family and friends.
She was kind and generous to everyone she met. She was a member of
Lower Coverdale Baptist Church, a devoted Christian, faithfully doing
her daily devotions into her 101st year. She loved teaching Sunday
School, singing in the choir and attending prayer meetings. She was a
life member of the Women’s Missionary Society. She was also
a life member of the Women’s Institute. She often helped
pack Food Boxes at the Albert County Food
Bank.
Muriel loved to cook, winning
many 1st place ribbons at the Albert County Exhibition for her sponge
cake. She also loved to knit. Her mother taught her to knit at the age
of 4. She continued to knit throughout her lifetime, knitting baby
hats for the Neonatal Unit at The Moncton Hospital in her 101st year.
Muriel was also an avid reader until several days before her passing.
One of her favorite things to do was to walk and ski on her beloved
woods trail. She often shared these times with friends and a faithful
dog.
We would like to express our
heartfelt thanks to Dr. Jamie Stuart, the Extra Mural nurses and
especially, Linda Pearce, for their loving and compassionate care for
the past several years. We would also like to thank the Red Cross and
Extra Mural for the loan of equipment to help us to safely care for
our mother during her final days at home.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions,
funeral attendance will be by invitation only on Monday, December 21,
2020.
Funeral arrangements are under
the care of Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton
