It is with great sadness and much love that our family says farewell to our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Donna Doreen Morgan, who left this blue planet on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at the age of 75 years.
Donna was born on April 11 in Calgary, Alberta, to Frederick and Verna Jane Morgan. She was predeceased by her brothers Harold, Robert, and Norman, and her sister Gwen. She is remembered fondly by her sister, Winnie, and her brother Gordon.
In 1964, she met our father, Percy Belcourt through her friend, and his cousin, Mabel in Calgary. She moved to St. Albert with him, where they raised their four children.
Mom loved her family and always made sure we had fun. She sang to us and taught us songs. She also taught us bible stories. Mom really enjoyed cooking and baking. She loved to read true stories and loved knitting, making puzzles, doing crossword puzzles, playing Facebook games, family get togethers, and music.
When she first arrived in St. Albert, she worked at the Convent on Mission Hill. She worked at Dairy Queen in the early 70s; managed A&W at St. Albert Centre in the 80s and won awards for having a high-quality control. All her staff called her Momma Cheese; and everyone loved and respected her.
Children always felt comfortable coming over to our house. A lot of wayward youth ended up there. Mom also worked at the Youth Detention Centre cooking for the youth and ran the concession at the Canadian Athletic Club Arena. Mom also worked at the Star of the North Retreat Centre as a cook for the Priests and guests. She was very skilled at cooking for large crowds.
Mom’s home cooked recipes were always very authentic and delicious. Her specialties were cabbage rolls, turkey dinner, home made soups and a variety of baked goods. We always sat down to supper at 5:00 p.m. and ate together family style. We would come home for lunch at noon to a nice hot meal and watch the Flintstones before heading back to school. My favourite thing she made on cold days was home made French fries and fresh baked bread.
Mom worked as a housekeeper for Newman Theological College and St. Joseph Seminary from about 1990 to the early 2000s. She left after injuring her back, spending a month doing physio at the Glenrose before bouncing back to normal. Her next gig was working at Superstore where she remained until her retirement in 2010, at the age of 65.
Mom met her partner Dougie Brown in the mid-90s. They shared a home in St. Albert and were close companions. Mom cared for Dougie after he suffered two strokes and Dougie took care of mom a lot during this past year.
Mom’s favourite flower was the Sweet Pea; her favourite drinks were Paralyzers; she loved to play the Facebook farming and café games; and she really loved sharing recipes and inspirational messages with her family and friends. Mom had a strong faith in God and knew in her heart that she would go to Heaven. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her most cherished gifts. She had a great memory and loved to recall stories from back in the day.
Her loving memory will be cherished by her best friend and companion, Dougie Brown, her daughter Roxanne and her three sons Troy, Trent (Kyla), and Trevor (Jennifer).
Donna will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Jesse, Chaeleen, Kyla, Desiree, Brianna, Caine, Brooke, Chantal, Sammy, Dylan, Gracie Anne, and Percie Mae; she will also be lovingly remembered by her great grandchildren Malakai, Ophelia, Aiden, Bentley, Anystyn, Lilith, Bronsyn, and Asher.
A private celebration of Momma’s life will take place at a later date.
