Milton Dexter Dorey
1937-2020
It is with great sadness we announce, on Tuesday, September 15, 2020,
Milton Dorey passed away peacefully at the age of 82.
He was born on October 9, 1937 and raised in Blockhouse where he lived
most of his adult life. Milton was the son of the late Elmer and Alice
Dorey.
In 1968, he started his own construction company, E.W. Dorey &
Sons Construction Limited with his father, where he spent most of his
working years.
A pillar of his community, and always an active and passionate member
of organizations including but not limited to the Bridgewater Jaycees,
the Blockhouse Fire Department, the Masonic Lodge 69 AF & AM,
Mahone Bay and St. James Anglican Church, Mahone Bay.
He was passionate about music and a mainstay in the local music scene
as a singer with various groups, including the Anglican Church Choir,
the South Shore Chorale, and various other Community Theatre groups
and barbershop quartets. Two particular quartets that he enjoyed so
much was with Lorne and Yvonne White, Jean Marshall and accompanied by
Jimmy Aulenback on piano. The other was the church quartet with
Michael Lutes, Joe Carver and Tom Ernst. Milton was always the
“go to” singer for local weddings and funerals and after
taking up playing the fiddle in his 60’s, was a member of the
Lunenburg County Fiddlers Club.
Milton was also passionate about travel and he and Dorothy always had
their bags ready for the next trip. He never wanted to stop learning
and would always stop to discuss just about anything with anyone.
There were many lively debates around the dining table during holidays
and family gatherings.
Milton is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dorothy Dorey (nee
Whynot); six children; Kerry Dorey (Nina) Pemberton, BC; Gina Dorey
(Steve Brazeau) Ottawa; Krista Cook, Halifax; Sherry Wheeler (Jake),
Mahone Bay; Vicki Whynot, Halifax and Reg Whynot (Cathy) Edmonton.
He was incredibly proud of his nine grandchildren, Megan, Tristan,
Jordan, Hannah, Emma, Juliana, Dana, RJ and Troy. He was smitten with
his great-granddaughter, Luna. He is survived by his sister, Diane
Dorey (David Risser).
He was predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Alice Dorey, and his
brother, Keith Dorey.
Due to COVID restrictions, a private funeral service will be held at
St. James Anglican Church, Mahone Bay and a reception will not be
held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Church Boys
League, in trust, at the Bank of Montreal, Mahone Bay. Donations
received will be transferred to the Milton Dorey Musical Bursary for
Continuing Education which is being set up in remembrance.
The family extend their thanks to the EHS paramedics and a special
thank you to Constable Rodney Arsenault for his kindness and
compassion.
