Obituary
Andrews, Michael John
November 9, 1941 – June 20, 2020
Mike passed away at Samaritan Place at the age of 78. He was predeceased by his mother Edith and father William. He is survived by his wife Tracy, son Michael (Pam), granddaughter Ashley (Will), great-grandsons Coen and Reid, sister Phyllis (John), niece Joanne (John) and their daughter Ellie and niece Mandy and her son Luke.
Mike was born in Boscombe, England and grew up in South Wales. This is where he met his wife Tracy and together they had their son Michael. Mike started working in the coal mines as a teenage boy and then became a fabricator/welder at Henley Forklift in Blackwood, Gwent Great Britain. He emigrated to Canada with his wife and son when he got a job at the Allan Potash Mine in the 1970’s. He redid his journeyman’s ticket here in Canada and worked at the mine as a welder for 30 years until his retirement. He worked alongside his childhood friend Mike Cunningham who was like a brother to him from the old country, as well as Roy Howell, Mike Newton, Lewis Thomas and Tony Grant. He was a strong voice for the OHSC for many years and was a strong believer in the union and a man of his principals. He always worked hard to pay the bills, put a roof over his family’s head, food on the table and clothes on their backs. He was very proud of his family.
Mike was a very social person who was always joking around, singing or telling a story. He would always stop for pints of beer after work with the boys (Don and Dave and the rest of the gang) at Whiskey Jack’s. Mike sang in the barber shop for years and loved music and playing records at home with Tracy.
Mike spent the last years of his life residing in Samaritan Place with Tracy after having a stroke. He received excellent care there from all of the staff and nurse practitioner Mike McFadden, to all of whom we are very grateful. He suffered mentally and physically after his stroke and in the end went out on his own terms. He is now at peace and surely back in the Wyllie Village in Wales where his heart always remained.
