Ruby Maureen Gail McConkey (Hooper) passed away peacefully at 82 years of age on September 19, 2020 in Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Maureen was predeceased by her parents Owen and Pearl Hooper, and her husband of 50 years, Albert “Ab” McConkey, as well as Brew and Murphy also known as the two best (AKA “most spoiled”) dogs you could ever meet. Her passing leaves a huge hole in our family and she will be missed by her children Dave (Janet), Karyn (Doug) Knowlan of Vernon, Don (Trinh) of Calgary, and Valerie (John) of Vancouver. Maureen will also be missed by her nine grandchildren, Austin (Kelly) Knowlan, Ashley (Paul) Hampton, Taylor (Ryan) Babiy, Liam (Jackie) McConkey, Kelsee Knowlan, Colin (Megan) McConkey, Megan, Cailie and Jacob, and eleven great-grandchildren. Maureen is further survived by her brothers Laurence (Pat) and Perry (Victoria) and her sisters Rhonda (Bill) Arnason and Valerie Hooper as well as various nieces and nephews. Maureen tended to look at life as one big adventure, whether it was driving around town looking at Christmas lights, or travelling the world over the past decade with her sister Valerie, travelling to Italy, France, Ireland, England, a European cruise, Montreal, Toronto (along with her other sister, Rhonda) and Las Vegas. She has also been on a cruise in the Caribbean with her son Don’s family, and in years past had travelled the west coast from Kitimat south to Tijuana, Mexico, seen Hawaii, and spent time in Mexico with her daughters. All of her grandchildren remember the spectacularly decorated cakes she made for their birthdays. Granny fully earned the nickname of “treat lady” as her jacket pockets were always full of treats for her dogs or any other dogs she might happen to come across. At family dinners she would complain about all the family dogs hanging around her as she was eating, while she would be sneaking them bits of food under the table. Maureen passed away with her daughter Karyn and her son in law Doug at her side and listening to Elvis. It doesn’t get much better than that. We would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Vernon Jubilee Hospital for the outstanding care they provided in mom’s final weeks. She could be a bit of a handful (in a good way) and you all took care of her with gentleness, good humour and grace. Thank you. In lieu of flowers please give a donation in mom’s name to the Vernon Jubilee Foundation.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Maureen McConkey September 19th 2020..
