Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Johnston
JOHNSTON, Mary
June 13, 1925 – Aug. 20, 2020
Formerly of Goderich, Mary passed away peacefully at Blue Water Rest Home in Zurich on August 20th, 2020 at the age of 95.
She was born in Lucknow on June 13, 1925 to Thomas and Helene Cooke. Predeceased by her husband Harvey Johnston, infant son, brothers Ray, Ross and Tom Cooke and sister Grace Solomchuk and son-in-law Kevin Mills. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Valerie Mills and Melanie Johnston and grandson Alex Mills. She is also greatly missed by her sisters Doris Wilson, Donna Finegan and Gertrude Wilson and her brother-in-law Ken Wilson.
Aunt Mary enjoyed sending birthday cards and receiving school pictures from her many nieces and nephews. An interest in photography started early when Mary was employed to hand tint black and white photos at Henderson’s photography business on the Square in the 1940’s.
After the death of her husband, she took over his mail route and continued to provide rural mail service to RR 3 Goderich in all weathers. She was a wonderful cook and baker, especially well-known for her delicious pies. As an avid fisherwoman, a collapsible rod and reel even accompanied her on one of her trips to Ireland but she most enjoyed fishing on her beloved Maitland River. Although she traveled the world, Huron County was her special place. She loved her family, the Port of Goderich and “her” lake (Huron). Her knowledge of the Bible was exceptional and she was a skilled crossword puzzle solver and Jeopardy watcher.
At Mary’s request, cremation has taken place. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a family celebration will follow at a later date.
Donations in Mary’s memory to the Blue Water Rest Home, Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Maitland Valley Conservation Authority or charity of your choice would be gratefully received.
