Mary Sara MacAulay
1932-2020
MacAULAY(McLean), Mary Sara
– It is with much sadness, we announce the
peaceful passing of Mary Sara (McLean) MacAulay, age 87, on July
16th, 2020 at Alderwood Rest Home,
Baddeck. Born in Inverness on August
8th, 1932, to the late Dan C. and Margaret
McLean.
Mom was a strong, fiercely independent woman. She was
intelligent, a historian and witty. She was a loving mother,
grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She was a devoted
member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, where she served as a
trustee and central treasurer for many years. She was a cancer
survivor, a diagnosis she handled with grace. She loved animals and
enjoyed her time spent volunteering with L’Arche Cape
Breton.
She was hard working, and wise beyond her years, starting her
career at the age of 15 with Royal Bank. She continued on to work for
AA. Munro Insurance, and Canada Post, retiring in 1997. She married
John. E. in 1949, spending 52 loving years together. They enjoyed the
simple things in life such as a good meal, Sunday drives, and visits
from their many friends. Aside from their children, their proudest
achievement was the house they built together on MacInnis Road in
Whycocomagh.
“Grammie” enjoyed traveling, reading, card
games and crossword puzzles. She seldomly missed the evening episodes
of Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. But above all, the thing she enjoyed
most in life was having company. Her house was a place of gathering
for many over the years. Whether it was the neighbourhood children,
family from away, new and old friends, or simply her grandchildren for
a sleepover, she always made sure you were well fed, and comfortable.
She was a wonderful baker, and always went out of her way to ensure
she made her guest’s favorite dessert. She had very close
relationships with all her nieces and nephews. She especially looked
forward to seeing Ted and Debbie every holiday weekend and
Donna’s trips to Cape Breton. She shared a very special bond
with her brothers Dougald and Sandy. Their Thursday visit was the
highlight of her week.
She will be remembered as a loving, outgoing, respected,
kind, brilliant person who’s smile and energy would light up
a room. She will be missed by not only her family and friends, but the
community of Whycocomagh and the congregation of St.
Andrew’s.
She is survived by her children, Jimmy (Brenda), Saint John;
Duart (Connie), Aberdeen; Leanne (Neil) MacKinnon, Aberdeen. Her
grandchildren Debora, Ottawa; Doreen (Mark), Illinois; Breagh
(Stephanie), Edmonton; Brooke, Halifax; Hilary, Aberdeen; and Liam,
Aberdeen; great-grandchild Emily, Illinois. Her brothers, Dougald,
Whycocomagh, and Sandy (Nancy) McLean, Port Hawkesbury. Numerous
dearly loved nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband,
John. E. MacAulay (2002); brother Donald McLean and his wife Muriel;
sister in law, Dorothy McLean; daughter in law, Katherine MacAulay and
niece, Judy McLean.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation the
