Obituary
PATRICK, MARY
March 24, 1928 – January 2, 2020
Mary was born March 24, 1928 in Saskatoon where she lived most of her life. She attended Princess Alexandra School and Bedford Road Collegiate.
In the late 1940’s, she began working with her father and brothers. For many years, she worked at Jim Patrick Sand and Gravel, Patrick Construction and Patrick Dodge. She was very proud of the contribution made by her family to the growth and prosperity to the City of Saskatoon and throughout the province of Saskatchewan.
In 1968, Mary established, owned and operated International Travel Bureau. Her business was very successful. After retiring in 1980, at the request of former clients and friends, she began organizing and guiding tours primarily to Europe, including Paris, Lourdes, Rome, The Holy Land, Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, and the Ukraine. She very much enjoyed the travel, the people she met and the friends she made during these trips.
Mary was a lifetime member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. In earlier years she was an active member of the U.C.Y., and was a member of St. George’s Cathedral choir for many years. She served on parish council at St. Peter and Paul Parish, and in the late 1950’s and 1960’s volunteered at The Queen’s House of Retreats. She was a member of The Board of Catholic Family Services. She was also a member of The Board of Directors for St. Volodymyr Village, holding the position of secretary for 13 years.
Mary was predeceased by her parents Tony and Ann Patrick; seven brothers: Fred and Peter in infancy, Jim (Josephine), Mike (Ann), Nick (Olive), Bill and Wally; two sisters: Julia Daly (Andrew) and Olga Hnatuk (John); nieces Gail Mszane and Marlene Ranville; nephews Michael Hnatuk, Michael Patrick Jr. and Kenneth Grise; brother-in-laws Arnold Schatz and Victor Boechler.
Left to mourn are her sister Patricia Boechler and sister-in-law Vivian Patrick, 26 nieces and nephews, and very many great- and great-great nieces and nephews. She loved each and every one very dearly, staying in contact with them and always being a big part of their lives. Her family ties reached beyond these bounds, with a great many extended “nieces and nephews” who called her Auntie Mary. At the gatherings she so cherished, filled with food, drink, laughter and conversation (and sometimes gambling), you would hear her be called Mary, Auntie Mary, Mimi, Auntie Marie or Maroosh. No matter what anyone called her, she was “the tie that binds”, the Auntie with no family, whose entire family was her own.
Wherever she went Mary made lasting friendships, always finding some common bond with those she met, some history or some story that connected her to them, so that all who met her loved her, respected her, and cherished their time with her. Her influence and friendship went far and wide, and she will be deeply missed by many.
Mary loved God and was very grateful for all of her blessings, especially her family and many friends that filled her life with much happiness.
The family would like to thank Mary’s caregivers over the years, the staffs at St. Volodymyr Villa, Saskatoon City Hospital, Circle Drive Special Care Home and St. Ann’s Senior Citizens Village, also Dr. Nykiforuk and David Schurr, for their kind, compassionate, cheerful and loving care.
A Prayer Service for Mary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at St. Volodymyr Villa (3102 Louise Pl.) in Saskatoon with Rt. Rev. Vladimir Mudri presiding. The Divine Liturgy will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church (Corner of 10th St. and Munroe Ave.) in Saskatoon with Fr. Raymond Lukie C.Ss.R. as Celebrant. The Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
