With heavy hearts but gratitude for a long, happy and healthy life, we the family of Mary McCaughin (nee Meaney), age 90, announce her peaceful passing in St. John’s on December 11, 2020. She is now in the arms of her Lord and Saviour in Heaven.
Our mom, Mary, was born in Red Head Cove and raised in Carbonear, NL. She was proud of where she came from and family and faith was everything to her. She was a beautiful, vivacious and vibrant woman and had no trouble meeting new people and making friends; she was a social butterfly. She was kind and generous to everyone and made many lifelong friendships. Her smile always lit up every room she entered. All her children’s friends even enjoyed hanging out with “da Mudder” Mary!
Mom worked as an accountant for Wescott’s in the 1960’s, then for Bruce Butler Construction LTD in the 70-80’s and retired from Fitzpatrick’s Auctioneering in the 90’s. With work-life behind her, mom and dad dedicated more time to their passion of gardening and creating the most amazing flower beds, along with a variety of trees, shrubs and hedges to compliment the whole garden. Everything was alive with colour, fragrance and blossoms galore! It was enjoyed by not only us but by all neighbours and friends who walked by or stopped in for a visit and a few laughs.
Mom and dad also got the travel bug and began travelling to the Caribbean onboard Holland America cruise ships. They loved cruising. They loved every part of it; the warm weather, the food, dining in style, the Casinos and the people they met from all over the world and stayed in touch with to this day.
Mom’s other hobbies included book reading and playing cards. She loved her “120’s” card club friends, each one was near and dear to her heart. One group played together for 54 years! She loved reading books of all kinds. As she aged, she also understood the importance of keeping one’s mind active, and added doing her ‘puzzle books” and other word games to her daily life, well that, and Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy; both of which she was good at and could easily outwit all of us!
Attending Sunday Mass was an important part of her life and she was a regular at Mary Queen of Peace (until this year of Covid). She rarely went out without dressing to the nines, and that included her weekly worshipping and gathering with her “church friends” to say hello, catch up and wish everyone well.
Five years ago, mom sold her home and was invited to share the home of her son David and daughter-in-law Cathy. It was wonderful mom was with her family and never had to worry about a thing. Neither did we.
Mom is survived by her three children, whom she loved with all her heart and was very proud of; Hugh, Mount Pearl; David (Cathy), St John’s; and Barbara (Debbie), Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; grandson Robbie, St. John’s; sisters Anna (Hulan), Ontario; and Alice (Dawalt), Indiana USA. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews across Canada and the United States and she loved and cared about all of them.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hugh, parents Thomas and Josephine (Hatch) Meaney, sister Angela O’Brien, brother James, and her cherished darling grandson, Tyler McCaughin.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no service or funeral at this time due to Covid-19, instead a celebration of her wonderful life will be announced for a later date when travel is safe once again.
Donations in Mary’s name can be made to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers or a charity of your choice.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mary McCaughin 2020..
