Obituary
Our beloved mother has left us after a wonderful life of 96 years. Pre-deceased by her husband Ronald Rogers Jobe in 1996 and sisters Margaret and Elinor. Survived by sister Frances. Mary leaves behind four sons Peter (Mary-Ann), Ian (Lynn), David, and Bruce (Lisa) as well as grandsons Andrew and Graham.
Mary Jeanette was born in Stratford, Ontario to Garwin Prang and Claire Walton. Her father’s work took him far afield to places such as Edmonton, Brantford and Winnipeg. Her mother died when she and her sisters were in their teens. Garwin then married Marjorie Snyder in 1946, step-mother to four accomplished young women.
Mary graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. In 1950, she earned her Public Health Nursing Designation (industrial nursing) from the University of Toronto. She made many life-long friendships with her Winnipeg nursing colleagues. Their reunions every five years were highly anticipated.
After graduation, she joined the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) and started travelling the country; first to York Township (Weston), Digby, Nova Scotia, then to Owen Sound in 1952, where she caught the eye of a young man from Sarawak, Ronald Rogers Jobe. They were married at Division Street United Church on September 17, 1955.
While raising her family, Mom was quite involved in the community; volunteering at the new “Family Y” starting in 1952 for two decades. In 1973, Mom was asked by the Ontario Ministry of Health to start up the Grey-Bruce Home Care programme (now known as LHIN); a valuable service which helps keep people in their homes and out of hospital.
Mom was a charter member of Baker Street Women’s Club (1982) and the Georgian Bay Garden Club at Owen Sound (1990). Mom loved her cards; whether it be playing bridge at Baker Street or at home with friends and family. Many will attest to the wonderful garden parties and Boxing Day open-houses at 416; a tradition that started in 1965 and continued for three decades.
We wish to thank the remarkable staff at Kelso Villa Retirement Home along with the MAiD team for their assistance in granting Mom’s wishes. Private family service. Interment at Sarawak Cemetery.
If you wish to donate, please consider Doctors Without Borders / MSF Canada, Stephen Lewis Foundation or the Grey Bruce Regional Health Centre Foundation.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mary Jobe March 11 1924 December 7 2020 (age 96)..
