Mary passed away suddenly at the age of 97. She was born in Balfour, the second youngest of ten children.
Mary’s school years were spent between Nelson and Rossland where she met many life-long friends. After high school she worked for the Nelson Daily News and it was around this time she met a young Nelson Maple Leafs player named Bill Vickers. They were married in 1947 and enjoyed 72 years of marriage until Bill’s death in 2019. Mary and Bill raised seven children together with Mary in charge of running the household. Mary enjoyed golf, curling and especially playing bridge. She volunteered at the Rossland Thrift Shop, Meals On Wheels and Mater Misericordiae. Mary was very active in her church. She was a member of the Scared Heart CWL for many years. It was her strong faith that got her through the deaths of two children, one grandchild and her husband.
Mary was pre-deceased by her mother and father, all her brothers and sisters, her daughter Laurine (Mick) Ellis, her son Patrick, her grandson Christopher and her beloved husband Bill. She is survived by her children Terry (Helen), Judy Jarrett, Janet (Don) Ferrey, Ken (Lori) and Kathy. She was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. As one of her friends said on hearing of her passing, “She must have shot straight up to Heaven like an arrow!”
She was an amazing wife and mother providing much love and support. We will miss her dearly.
We would like to thank the paramedics, RCMP and Dr. Sandstrom, who attended to mom, for their kindness and compassion.
Due to Covid 19, a private family Mass of Christian Burial was held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rossland on Friday, August 14, 2020. Al Grywacheski of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ was entrusted with arrangements.
You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Mary Florence Vickers August 8th 2020..
