Nowaczek, Mary Anne – Halifax and formerly of Oxford. It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our much loved sister, aunt and friend, Mary Anne Nowaczek, age 63, at the Halifax Infirmary on February 11, 2020. Mary Anne was born on July 20, 1956 in Oxford, NS, where she grew up, attended school and graduated from Oxford Regional High School. She went onto graduate from Acadia University in 1979 with a BSc and from Saint Mary’s University with an MBA in 1992. While at Acadia University she met her lifelong friends, Debbie, Denise and Karen. After a short stint working in Winnipeg in 1979-80, Mary Anne returned to Nova Scotia and spent the majority of her career with Nova Scotia Power and Emera, holding progressively more responsible roles, initially in Information Technology and later in Internal Audit. Mary Anne was interested in sports and fitness. She went on many bicycling adventures, including to Europe and several Grand Tours with Valo Quebec. One of Mary’s Anne’s proudest accomplishments was taking a cycling tour to Northern Canada, which included cycling the Dempster Highway to Inuvik, NWT. Mary Anne was an active curler at the Mayflower Curling Club for many years. Most recently, you could find Mary Anne several days per week at the Canada Games Centre where she enoyed the higher intensity spin classes. Mary Anne loved to travel and took many trips within Canada and to the US and Europe. She recently went on a long anticipated trip to Australia, which included a first introduction to her Australian great-nieces. She had a love of animals. When Mom went into care, she undertook to take in Mom’s three cats. On two different occasions she adopted an elder rescue cat. She also made sure the neighbourhood feral cats had food, water and shelter. But most of all she loved her family and friends. She was the best aunt any child could want. She was there for them. She was their second mother and she was proud of each of them. Left to grieve are sisters, Elizabeth and Linda (Curtis); and brothers, Ernest (Rene) and Ronald (Brenda); nieces, Katherine, Zoe, Emilie, Chrystal and Christine; nephews, Luke, Aaron, Darcy and Paul. A very special mention are friends, Debbie and Jim. She had many friends too numerous to list. Mary Anne was predeceased by her parents, Barbara and Joseph Nowaczek; brother, John and his wife, Diane; and infant sister, Sophia. Cremation has taken place under the care of MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home & Crematorium (902-447-2930). There will be a celebration of life at a later date. Donations in her memory can be made to an animal shelter of your choice. On-line condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.mmcfunerals.com.
