Martina Hessel
1930-2020
On Mother’s Day May 10, 2020 Martina
Muilwijk Hessel, loving wife and mother of three children passed away
at the age of 90.
Martina was born on February
7, 1930 in Rotterdam Netherlands to Arie Muilwijk and
Neeltje-Ober-Muilwijk. She grew up in Utrecht where
She met the love of her life, Johannes, shortly after WWII, they
married and immigrated to Montreal with their son Ron in 1953, where
their daughters Ingrid and Angela were born.
Together
they all moved to Ford Bank in 1974. In 1991 Martina sadly lost her
husband of thirty-nine years. She remained in Ford Bank
until 2001, when she moved to Church Court in
Moncton.
Martina was a dedicated and
devoted mother first and foremost. She treasured her children and
embraced every moment with them.
She was
a sharp open minded and forgiving person with a strong understanding
of human nature and could always see the other side of any
situation. She taught us all to be more
compassionate. Always a
generous soul, she loved to spoil her
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, never forgetting a
birthday or special occasion.
As a young woman she worked in
retail. Later in life she trained and worked as a cook in
Moncton and then the Cook Nook in Richibucto. She also served as the
personal chef of JD Irving for a short time.
Faced
with many challenges in her life she always dealt with things head on
and did her best to make the most of every
situation. Surviving WWII, she had many
stories to share, none as sweet as the day Canada liberated Holland.
She was 15 at the time.
Martina was preceded in death
by her mother, Neeltje and father, Arie, her husband, Johannes, her
five siblings, Geetruida, Jaap, Nel, Bep and Dora. She was also
predeceased by her grandson, Johnathan. She is survived by her three
children, Ron Hessel, Ingrid Leger (Tim) and Angela Nesbitt
(Rick). She leaves behind seven grandchildren, Shawn,
Chylene, Ronnie, Shannon, Niomi, Jordan and Evan as well as ten great
grandchildren, Johnathan, Desiree, Martina, Jacob, Brianna, Madison,
Sawyer, Sydney, Hilary and Holden and many nieces and
nephews.
A small gathering of family
