It is with profound sadness that the family announces the unexpected passing of Mark Almond Westhaver of Fox Point at the age of 85, who passed peacefully at home on November 12, 2020. Mark was born in Fox Point, the son of the late Earl Westhaver and Nellie Barkhouse. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the love of his life, Mary Margaret ‘Margie’ (Campbell); children, Mark (Beverley) of Bedford, Nancy (Rod) Nicholson of Halifax, Derrick (Donna) of Bedford, Natalie (Gary) Jay of Upper Tantallon and beloved grandchildren, Shawn, Andrew, Erin, Nathan and Donovan.
Mark was predeceased by siblings Nancy Simundson and Lloyd.
Mark was always a hard worker and at the young age of 11, he delivered telegrams in Halifax on his bicycle. Throughout his career, Mark was a painter at Parker Brothers, a freight handler on the Halifax Waterfront and spent over 30 years at the National Harbours Board in Halifax.
Throughout his life and retirement, Mark’s passion was hunting and fishing, creating great memories with his family and in his later years with his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. Mark had a special place in his heart for Molega Lake and his family cottage at Mill Lake where he spent so much of his time fishing, socializing, four wheeling, and ski-dooing. One of Mark’s favorite hunting locations years ago was Loch Lomond, Cape Breton.
As a lifetime resident of Fox Point, Mark volunteered on various local boards. Mark was a seasoned crib player, teaching the game to his children and grandchildren, and he played crib with his wife Margie most afternoons.
Mark will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially by his brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, and extended family.
To meet Mark was to know him and therefore to love him.
We are grateful to Jimmy Graves and family for being such wonderful neighbours. A special thanks to the first responders for their support.
Due to COVID-19, there will be no service or visitation taking place at this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Hubbards Fire Department.
