McVICAR
Marion Florence
(nee Warner)
1925 – 2020
Marion Florence McVicar (nee Warner) passed away peacefully after a short illness at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK on Oct 24, 2020 at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Florence Warner of Elstow, SK; her husband Hugh McVicar of Colonsay, SK; her brothers Jack and Bob Warner; sisters-and-brothers-in-law Elaine Warner, Lorne and Gladys McVicar and Don and Eva McVicar.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Muriel (Ken) Ziegler; her sons Dan (Lois) and Ray (Lorna) McVicar; her grandchildren Carolyn, Gary (Breanna), Dean (Amie) and Kevin Ziegler and Tim (Lynn) McVicar, Kelly (Darren) Hinds, Scott (Lacie), Mark and Ben (Emily) McVicar; her great grandchildren Blair and Hugh McVicar and Abby and Arthur Hinds; her sister-in-law Carole Warner; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Marion was born in Saskatoon on December 7, 1925 and raised in Elstow. She had a happy childhood and each year her mom and dad would load the tent and 3 children into the ‘29 Chevy to spend 2 weeks at Waskesiu. She often talked about the wonderful Elstow community that surrounded her family in good times, and during the hard times of the Great Depression, and the war years. After completing Grade 12, Marion attended Normal School (Teachers’ College) in Saskatoon in 1945. She taught in the one-room country school at South Allan, SK in 1946 and 1947. Marion married Hugh at Elstow on July 3, 1947. Together they farmed, raised their family, and enjoyed neighbours, friends and family. Marion was an active member of her community; the Colonsay United Church Women (UCW), the Wheatland Library, and a leader in Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT) and 4-H Sewing Clubs. She loved her country life and took great pride in her children’s education, her flowers and vegetable garden. In 1980, Marion and Hugh moved to Colonsay, and she was very happy to be back in town. She lived on Skye Drive for 23 years where she kept house, tended her yard, babysat grandchildren and enjoyed long walks with neighbours.
After Hugh passed away in 2004, Marion sold the house in Colonsay and moved to a new condo in Saskatoon across the street from Market Mall. Marion thrived in Saskatoon, made new friends and often walked across the street to pick up a few groceries, visit old friends, wander through the shops for bargains or return items she had previously purchased. She was an avid reader, word puzzle solver, and regularly knit mittens and sewed pyjamas for her grandchildren. In 2011, Marion moved to The Bentley, an independent living centre in Saskatoon. She had a beautiful suite with a view of the central courtyard, fountain and flowers. Marion especially enjoyed her table companions and sharing the latest current events and family news. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marion’s memory may be made to the Colonsay Cemetery Fund. A private family service at Colonsay Cemetery has taken place. Condolences may be left for the family at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements have been entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.
