It is with sadness that we, the family of Marie Van Ingen, report the event of her passing. However it is with joy we will continue to celebrate her long life.
The dignity and determination with which she lived should serve as an inspiration for all who knew her and by embracing this individually we will not only honour her memory but become better people as a result.
So, please fill the void created by her absence with love, understanding and patience for one another.
Marie is survived by her son, Richard Van Ingen, daughter-in-law Sue Willis and many relatives in Holland. Pre-deceased by her husband John Van Ingen, father Hendrik Versteeg, mother Marie Van der Kleijn and sisters, Joyce, Hennie and Tonkie. Marie was cremated and it is hoped that her ashes can be scattered in Nova Scotia, where she enjoyed much of her time with her husband. It is here where they will be united again.
Marie was of Dutch heritage, born in Dutch occupied Indonesia in 1926. She enjoyed a carefree childhood; playing in the tropical outdoors until the events of World War II split her family apart.
Her father was sent to an internment camp, never to be seen again. Marie, her sisters Joyce, Hennie and Tonkie along with their mother were sent to another camp. The hard lessons learned of survival would become the basis of Marie’s strong silent nature.
Marie would endure three different internment camps until the war ended and in 1945 her remaining family was sent to Holland.
Later an opportunity for a new life presented itself and Marie faced an adventure of a different kind when she immigrated to Canada in 1959. Though knowing very little English she persevered and found work. Fate stepped in again and she met John Van Ingen through a friend on a blind date.
Love turned to marriage in 1962 and after Richard, her son was born, the family of three moved from Alberta to Nova Scotia to begin a new life there.
After many happy years Marie’s endurance was tested yet again when John became ill and she became his caregiver. After John’s death in 2003 Marie learned to live alone, proving again that she was a survivor.
Age eventually caught up with Marie and to maintain a house alone became difficult. Her last adventure was about to begin.
In 2015 she moved to Newfoundland to live close to Richard and Sue. She lived happily in her own personalized apartment, built to suit her – attached right to their home.
It was there that she would stay.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Marie Van Ingen 2020..
