SKAKOON, MARIA ‘CORONA’
It is with great sorrow that our family announces the sudden passing of Maria Corona Skakoon (nee Perusini) on Thursday, May 7th, 2020 at the age of 89. She was prematurely home birthed in Sudbury, weighing only three pounds, on November 12th, 1930 to Giovanni and Palmira Perusini (nee Botarel). Predeceased by Sylvester A. Skakoon in 1992. Corona is survived by her three sons; Sylvester-Shyamasundara (Sundari-Sanja), David (Patricia), and Mario (Joanne), her grandchildren; Shayna (Brandon), Stuart (Gemma), and Arion. Predeceased by her brother Mario (died in infancy), Corona is also survived by her brother Geremia (Jacqueline), close nephews and niece; Peter (Shelley), Dina (Jim), and John, and great nephews; Evan, Curtis, Andrew, and Franklin as well as many beloved cousins.
Corona worked at Revenue Canada in Sudbury for over thirty years. An avid gardener with an extensive knowledge of horticulture, she was a life-long member of the Sudbury Horticultural Society, where she won first place for many of her beautiful flowers and plants. She was skilled in the art of dry floral arrangements. Her skills extended to baking and cooking, and she was an expert seamstress. She also valued her membership with the Red Hat Society as well as a social Board Game Club. Corona greatly enjoyed reading books of different genres and passed her love of reading to her children. She loved animals, bird watching, dancing, and taking photos. She was a great storyteller and a knowledgeable, articulate speaker with an active mind and impressive memory (just don’t ask her where her keys are). She was quick-witted and loved to laugh and tell jokes. She is remembered as a fair-minded, kindhearted, spiritual and noble person who always put the needs of others before herself. She treated young people as equals, making them feel welcome and not just “tolerated”; a wonderfully unique lady. She had great faith in God and was a member of the local Baha’i congregation. Corona generously donated to her favourite causes. Most of all, she loved her family. She will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name to the charity of your choice. The family will be planting a tree in her memory, within a memorial garden on their property.
