Cooke, Margaret (McNeill) R.N.
Surrounded by loving family the death occurred at Andrews of
Summerside, on Thursday, August 7, 2020 of Margaret (McNeill) Cooke,
aged 105 years. Born in Summerside in 1915, Margaret was a
Veteran of World War II, serving as a nurse on the HMHS Letitia, a
British hospital ship. She made 11 crossings between the
British Isles and Canada, returning home with the injured, war brides,
and children of Canadian soldiers. After the war Margaret
continued her nursing career in Summerside, eventually taking on the
role of head nurse of the maternity ward at Prince County Hospital.
She married Esmonde “Dean” Cooke, the Dean of Pharmacy at
Dalhousie University and they lived in Halifax and Sydney, happily
married for 30 years before he passed in 2005; she then returned to
Summerside to be with family and friends. Everyone will miss
Margaret’s welcoming smile, her warmth and her
kindness.
She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Pearl (Tamlyn)
McNeill. Survived by her loving sister Dorothy McNeill; sister-in-law
Christine (Baker) McNeill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband Dean Cooke; brothers and sisters Gertrude
(James) Mullins, Francis “Peg” (Mary), Ronald (Bonnie), John
(Bernadette), Pearl (Elmer) Murphy, Tanton (Monica), Hubert
(Christine), Gerald (Florence), Edward (Wilma) and Anita ((Phillip)
Manion.
The family would like to extend thanks to the staff at
Andrews of Summerside, and friend and devoted caregiver Jeanne Gallant
for their support and compassion.
Resting at the Moase Funeral Home, Summerside. Private family
visiting hours will be held. A private family Funeral Mass will be
held at St. Paul’s Church with interment to follow in St.
Paul’s Cemetery, Summerside. Memorial donations to the
Prince County Hospital Foundation or St. Paul’s Church would
be appreciated.
