Margaret Elizabeth Pirie – 96,
Debert, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 6, 2020, at
Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Prince Albert,
Saskatchewan, she moved to Truro with her mother, Lois Pirie and
father, James F. Pirie, who owned and ran the Success Business
College, Truro, for many years.
A Lieutenant Governor’s award winner, she graduated
from Truro Academy before attending Acadia University where she was
awarded her B. Mus in both voice and piano. Margaret did post-grad
work at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she was one
of the students privileged enough to study with Emmy Heim and Ernesto
Vinci; she specialized in French Art Song and German
Lieder.
At the beginning of her career, she moved home to Truro to
help care for her ailing father, and remained home after his death.
She taught music first at The Edgehill School for Girls in Windsor and
then with the Truro schools system, teaching in almost all the local
elementary schools in the area, and also at the
“Academy” and CEC upon its opening, for 33 years.
She was the choral director for all of the CEC Musical Productions
from 1971 – 1986.
Margaret was the organist and choir director at First United
Church, Truro, for several years and at many other churches in the
Truro area following retirement from her teaching career. She was a
member of IODE and was awarded both Provincial and National Life
Memberships, holding many offices throughout more than 60 years,
including Provincial Secretary and Provincial President; she was also
a founding member of Zonta Club of Truro.
Margaret was predeceased by her former husband, Wylie Edward
Dill; stepson, Robert “Bobbie” Wylie Dill. She is
survived by her son, Brett Dill; stepchildren, Gregg (Sandra), Marilyn
(Larry); grandchildren, Robbie Dill, Ceilidh Dill, Mason Dill,
Jennifer McNutt, Michael McNutt, Scott McNutt.
Private interment will be held in Bible Hill Cemetery, Warren
Drive, Bible Hill. If so desired, donations in Margaret’s
memory to Colchester SPCA are welcomed.
