Margaret Donalda Donnie Amell Thursday December 12th 2019

MARGARET DONALDA “DONNIE” AMELL
January 17,1940 – December 12, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Grandmother at the age of 79 at Riverview Hospital on the afternoon of Thursday December 12, 2019. She was predeceased by her husband Don.
Donnie is lovingly remembered by her sons Zachary, Jay (daughter-in-law Kelora, grandchildren Brendan & Justin) and Derek (daughter-in-law Anita, grandchildren Kevin & Lauren).
Donnie and her husband Don enjoyed serving God in many ways. They were both involved in children’s ministries, adult bible studies and evangelism. Donnie’s home was open to many visitors from all over the world and she was a gracious host. She served by Don’s side during his pastoral ministry and loved to share her musical talents as a choir director and pianist. She was an accomplished pianist and had earned her ARCT from the Royal Conservatory of Music. She later taught piano in her home to many students.
Donnie was a stay-at-home Mom to three rambunctious boys. She adored her dog Benji who ended up being the favorite son. Hawaii was one of her favorite places to visit. Donnie had many lifelong friends who she enjoyed sharing recipes with. Donnie enjoyed visiting with her family. Her grandchildren were important to her and she always had some Skittles on hand. Donnie was proficient at knitting, sewing and crocheting and even crochet characters from Winnie-The-Pooh for each grandchild as well as baby blankets, booties and sweaters.
Donnie suddenly became a paraplegic in 1999 and life was forever changed. Over the years, she had many challenges but also many successes such as going back into the workforce which she enjoyed immensely as well as relearning how to drive with hand controls. She remained independent and rarely, if ever, complained or asked why this happened to her. There were quite a few extended hospital admissions where she overcame even the doctor’s expectations and was able to return home. After Don passed away, she continued to live on her own in their apartment. Home Care became involved to help with her care as needed. Donnie enjoyed spending time with her friends at Agape Villa, playing whisk and cribbage and made some wonderful friends.
Against all odds, after the last hospital discharge two years ago, she continued to live at home with the help of Home Care until recently when her condition deteriorated. She was admitted to Riverview Health Centre October 4, 2019. Donnie wondered why God was making her wait as she was eager to meet Him in heaven. God called her home on Thursday December 12, 2019 and we are thankful for Nurse Carol who was with her as she took her last breath.
The family wishes to thank the Home Care staff who have looked after Donnie for many years as well as the many doctors and nurses at Health Sciences Center who have cared for her through the years. We would also like to thank the staff at Riverview Hospital for their compassion and care throughout her stay.
A memorial service will be held at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St., on Friday December 20, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made in Donnie’s memory to Union Gospel Mission or Child Evangelism Fellowship.
