Obituary for Marek Ethan Soetaert
August 6, 2002 – September 9, 2020
On September 9, Marek grew too tired to continue his fight. He slipped away surrounded by some of his favorite people.
He leaves to mourn his brothers, Caelum and Beckett, his parents Grace and Marc, grandparents, Velvet and Wayne Davies, Liz Soetaert, his aunties, uncles and cousins, Monique, Jay, Mitch, Sheila, Jessie, Lee, Chad, Naomi, Lance, Kass, Taryn, Devin, Carmen, Mike, Kjeryn, Trussan, Trentan, Leita, Godson Emrys, his favorite caregiver Nicky, many other important extended family members, numerous friends and neighbors. Marek was pre-deceased by his grandpa Remi.
We want to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Rehana Chatur, Dr. Lyle McGonigle, auntie nurse Sheila and all the Garneau Pediatric staff for the kindness, care and attention they have given Marek over his 18 years. Extra special thanks to Dr. McGonigle who provided constant medical and emotional support to ensure Marek’s last few days were comfortable.
Marek was our hero who took on each day with courage, eagerness and wonder. He was a willing participant in every new adventure from downhill skiing to kayaking to being pulled behind the snowmobile by his crazy brothers. Those brothers were determined to expand Marek’s experiences to places that most people in wheelchairs don’t have a chance to go.
Marek was loved by many and he loved unconditionally. We will miss him.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the 3D Children’s Society www.3dcharityhockey.com, Stollery Children’s Hospital www.stollerykids.com or the CDG Canada charity www.canadacdg.com.
