Obituary of Lloyd Seaward
Lloyd had incredible energy, and a love of life, and that kept him in perpetual motion for his entire 102 years. He was a very social person, who loved to hear other people’s stories, and loved to tell the story of his own amazing life.
Lloyd was a dedicated husband and father. He was devoted to Margaret for 70 years and they were seldom apart. He had a genuine interest in each of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was extremely generous to his family and spending time with them gave him great joy.
Lloyd was born October 3, 1917 in Clarenville, NL. He is the last of seven siblings. He also had five half-siblings and three step-siblings. He lost his own mother when he was 12. As a teenager Lloyd fished for a summer off Random Island and trapped across Gander Lake for a winter. Before going overseas, he was hired by the Newfoundland Railway, moved to Bishop’s Falls and was a fireman on the first steam engines.
After returning from the war, he returned to the Newfoundland Railway and became a stationary engineer. He went on to work as a stationary engineer at the hospital and the paper mill in Grand Falls, before finishing his career as Superintendent of Maintenance, responsible for the Grand Falls Trade School, Provincial Building and Arts and Culture Centre. He was highly respected by everyone who he worked with.
Lloyd was a war hero. He spent seven years in the British Royal Navy, and participated in famous naval battles in both the Atlantic and Pacific, and was a POW for over three years. In 2018, he was honoured for his naval service at Exeter Cathedral, Exeter, England.
Lloyd loved nature and the woods. He spent all his spare time camping, walking, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. He was fascinated by the Beothuk canoes and the birchbark canoes he built are on display at The Rooms in St. John’s, The Beothuk Interpretation Centre in Boyd’s Cove, and the Botwood Heritage Museum.
He passed peacefully away on March 16, 2020 at the Palliative Care Unit in the Carmelite House, Grand Falls-Windsor at the age of 102 years. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret; parents Richard and Maggie; granddaughter Debra; daughter-in-law Kelli; seven siblings; five half siblings and three step-siblings.
Left to mourn are sons, David (Marie), and Gerald (Pam); and daughter, Helen (Jim) Stuckless. Also left to mourn are his beloved grandchildren, Darlene (Frank) Dyke, David R. Seaward, Carla (Sean) Clarke, Donna (Lawrence) Ducey, Darryl (Kala) Stuckless, Mark (Krista) Stuckless, Dylan Seaward, and Lydon (Mackenzie) Seaward; and great-grandchildren, Aaron L., Erica, Jeffrey, Aaron D., Danielle, Ethan, Emily, Caroline, Cameron, Adrianna, Olivia, Devin, Khloe, and Kolton; granddaughter-in-law Lisa Ellis.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic visitation and funeral service will be limited to family and close friends.
