Linus’ Obituary
Linus Henry Becher was born in North Star, Alberta, on September 29, 1939 to Joseph and Angela Becher, and passed away from cancer on June 9, 2020 in his family home in Manning, Alberta at the age of 80 years. He was the fourth of seven children.
Linus began his school years in North Star, then attended the Freidenstal Mission for grades 3-5. In 1950, a catholic school was opened in Manning which he attended until grade 12, when he attended St. Anthony’s College in Edmonton. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics from the University of Alberta in 1960, followed by a Bachelor of Education. During his resident years at St. Anthony’s and St. Joe’s College at the U of A he loved the comradery of the other residents and fully participated in campus life.
Faith and family were of foremost importance in Linus’ life, and he was committed to raising his children with daily prayer and weekly mass. He remained an active member of the Knights of Columbus throughout his adult life, frequently attending fourth degree events with Dolores. In addition to being a Knight, he was a committed volunteer with the church choir and Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
Linus worked as teacher, school administrator and farmer. His teaching years were spent in Peace River, Valleyview, Grande Prairie, Manning and Dixonville, and even a brief stint in Dominica in the British West Indies! He enjoyed watching and playing sports and reading, and was always in tune with the news of the day. Music was a large part of his life, singing or playing the violin or piano; he willingly shared his talent with his family, friends, church and wider community. He loved the family farm and western lifestyle, particularly events that included horses.
Linus will be lovingly missed by his wife of almost 51 years Dolores (nee Stang) Becher, his children Geraldine (Derek) Collins, Jennifer (Grant) Collins, and Carmen (Alain) Houle, and his grandchildren Cain, Shae and Amanda Collins, Jared, Shane, Ethan, Liam and Grace Collins, and Jessica, Taylor and Sarah Houle. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph (September 5, 1992) and Angela (August 6, 1961) Becher; step-mother Ledwina Becher (October 7, 2003); father-in-law Frank Stang (April 15, 2016); sisters Barbara Kaup (May 27, 1996), Marietta Bazinet (June 4, 2017) and Sr. Thecla Becher (August, 2018); brothers-in-law William Russnak (June 14, 1980), Clem Jaeger (May 25, 2017), Bill Kaup (September 3, 2019), Douglas May (April 20, 2002) and Bill Rycroft (April 25, 2011), as well as many members of his step-family.
A Private Mass of Christian Burial will take place.
