1928 – Leonard Nelsen – 2020
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Leonard Nelsen on Monday, November 30th, 2020. Leonard leaves to cherish his memory his beloved daughters: Doris Barnes, Elaine (Doug) Turner, Renee (Maurice) Trottier; nine grandchildren: Aurora (Bobby), Rhett (Lynda), Sonja (Ryan), Brittney (Ryan), Gisele (David), Celeste (Graham), Claire (Anthony), Dominic and Stefan; eleven great grandchildren; his sisters, Mary and Dorothy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Leonard was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Florence; son, Eugene in infancy; son-in-law, Hank; grandson-in-law, Steve; and one sister, Gladys and husband, Bill; and two brothers-in-law, Norman and Marcel. Leonard was born in Medicine Hat and raised North of Irvine. He attended Long Valley School. Leonard married Florence Mayer in December 1951. Together they made their home on the family farm North of Irvine until 1997, at which time they retired to Medicine Hat. Throughout the years Leonard was actively involved in the community serving in various positions on many boards: UFA, Clearwater Hall, Irvine Mutual Telephone Company, Many Island Grazing Association, Bow Island Grazing Association, Dr. Dan MacCharles Auxiliary Hospital, which later merged with the Medicine Hat & District Hospital Board, 40 Mile Gas Co-op, the Irvine Chinook Club, Irvine Peace United Church, Irvine Complex, and Irvine and District Ag Society. In 1990, Dad was honoured to receive the Volunteer Recognition Award from Cypress County and Irvine Communities. For several years, Leonard and Florence enjoyed being part of the Good Sam RV Club. Dad enjoyed spending holidays and special occasions with family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered for his work ethic, honesty, integrity, wisdom and love of family. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions limiting funeral attendance to 10 people, a private family Funeral Service will be held at Peace United Church, 28 Pacific Avenue Irvine, AB T0J 1V0, on Thursday, December 3rd, 2020 with Gary W. Goran officiating. Private interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to view the service via live streaming at www.saamis.com through the webcast link shown on Leonard Nelsen’s obituary page.
