Lena Peyton 1931 2020

Obituary of Lena Peyton
On September 6, 2020, Lena Peyton (nee Clarke) passed away peacefully (with “neither an ache nor a pain”) at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s. Lena was 88 years of age.
Lena Clarke was born on September 28, 1931 in Victoria (BC – “behind Carbonear”, as Lena often said), Newfoundland. Lena was the daughter of George and Mabel Clarke, who moved from Victoria to Markland when Lena was 5 years old. After completing high school in Markland, at the age of 17 years Lena began preparation for her 35 year teaching career by attending Normal School, which was a teacher training school operated as a department of Memorial University College in St. John’s. Lena taught in several communities before arriving in Botwood where she taught for more than thirty-fine years; she retired in 1986.
While teaching Lena continued her education by attending summer school sessions and taking evening courses, with the result being she had the equivalent of four years of university.
While living in Botwood, Lena met the love of her life, Edgar Peyton, whom she married in 1952. Lena and Edgar raised three children in Botwood and lived there until Edgar’s death in 2003.
Lena will be remembered for her community service, having been an active member of the Lionettes Club and the Trinity United Church Women in Botwood.
Lena spent the last years of her life living at Pleasant View Towers in St. John’s where she was loved and cared for by the dedicated staff on unit 2 North West. Lena had nothing but praise for all the tremendous staff at Pleasant View Towers and her family is extremely grateful for the thoughtful and loving care Lena received during her time there.
Lena was predeceased by her husband Edgar Peyton, by her parents George and Mabel Clarke of Markland, by her two brothers Ralph Clarke and Roy Clarke, by her sister Jean Chapman and by her great grandson Jaxson.
Left to mourn with loving memories are two sons Daniel (Cathy) and Eddy (Connie) and daughter Carolyn Way (Gary). Also mourning the loss of Lena are her three brothers: Allan Clarke (Ruth), Harold Clarke (Ida) and Arnold Clarke (Lillian) and her two sisters: Linda Hywarren (Dennis) and Dorothy Thorne (Ivan). Nanny Peyton/Nanny Lena will be greatly missed by her 11 grandchildren, her 21 great grandchildren and her great, great grandson.
A funeral service will be held at Trinity United Church in Botwood on Thursday, September 10, 2020 at 2 p.m.
Flowers are gratefully accepted, or in lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Trinity United Church in Botwood.
