We, the family of Lawrence Maxwell “Newf” Galpin, regret to announce his passing on
Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born February 21, 1943, in Codroy Valley, NL, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Jessie
(Samms) Galpin and stepson of the late Arthur Janes.
In his early years, Lawrence worked as a moose guide and until retirement, worked as a laborer
in the construction industry.
He is survived by his long time companion, Mary Kelly; daughter, Marina (Marie Farr), Sydney;
son, Benjamin (Lily), Dartmouth; the mother of his children, Marie Bauer; grandchildren, Natalie,
Violet and Blair; great-grandchildren, Roderick, Joseph, Maxwell and Chloe; stepchildren,
Sandra, Mike and Paul, as well as their families; sister, Thelma Snow, St. George’s, NL; and
brothers, Walter, Codroy Valley, NL and Eddie, ON.
Besides his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy Samms and Eileen
Musseau; brother, Gordon.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on
Tuesday, February 25 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Canon Brenda Drake officiating. Interment will take
place at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the An Cala Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
