Lawrence Patrick Houle “Teddy Boy” (Tay-Basse-Gay-Inini) “One Who Brings Bright Light To A Point”, passed onto the spirit world on June 4, 2020 at 12:02am in Dauphin, Manitoba. He was 81 years old. He resided in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with his loving wife of 26 years, Michelle Houle. He said his home is wherever he was. He was a traditional Anishnabe Elder, medicine man, ceremonialist, language speaker, culture preservationist and he shared his life experiences with all people that he came in contact with. He was born in Ebb and Flow, Manitoba.
He was predeceased by his father, Pierre Houle, His Mother, Edith Spence, and his step-father, Walter Flett. His sisters, Alice Mousseau ( brother in law Leonard), Doreen Malcolm, Susan Thompson (brother in law Clifford); and his brothers, Jimmy (James) Flett, Edward Houle (wife Rita), and Percy Houle. Mother In Laws, Thelma Jean Richardson and Edith Pringle.
He is survived by his sisters, Claudia Houle (Edward), Gertrude Flett, Myrtle Eichin- Hanslip (Elvis). His sister in laws, Mary Houle, Valerie Flett, and Lori Pierce (Darren), his brother in laws, Joe Malcolm and Jerry Head;. Father in Law, Barry Magnusson, His wife, Michelle Houle, his daughter and only child, Lori Anne Houle-Laycock (Mark), and her Mother and former wife, Thelma Houle, his grandchildren, Jennifer Houle-Famakinde (Mike), Zoe and Joel Laycock, and his great grandchildren, Seth and Levon Famakinde. Numerous nieces, and nephews, and extended family members.
He was loved by all who met him. He believed family is “All My Relations”. Recognizing his ceremonial brothers and sisters across Turtle Island. He was a world renowned champion fiddle player of the old style Metis fiddle music. Lawrence also shared his life with many musicians, on and off stage, around the world.
He studied archeology at the University of Manitoba. He was an electrician. He studied Education at Brandon University and was a school teacher. He played in Carnegie Hall in New York City for their 100th anniversary concert. He held an audience with the Queen of England. He was inducted into the Smithsonian Institute National Museum of the American Indian Heritage. He was an actor in the films, Medicine Fiddle and had a part in the film, Spirit Rider. His music, including the Anishinabe Christmas Carols can be found on itunes. He initiated Bacon Ridge first MMF local and was proud to bring their first Santa Claus parade for the community. He loved all animals, and held a special place in his heart for cats and dogs. Lawrence was a loyal bingo player and he enjoyed all games of chance. He loved the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs. As a player, and a spectator he was an avid sports fan and athlete. He loved all sports. As the founding Elder of Ke Mama Nnanik, his legacy lives on with Metis Calgary Family Services, as a grandfather, his vision was a healthy community for Native children and families.
For friends and family in Manitoba, a viewing will be on Friday, June 5th, 2020, at the Mosaic Funeral Cremation Service, Inkster Chapel and reception centre located at 1839 Inkster Boulevard. In Winnipeg, Manitoba between 2 and 5pm. **Please note** Manitoba Health Act Covid-19 Protocol is in effect**
A memorial service, traditional pipe ceremony will be held on June 21, 2020, Summer Solstice/Father’s Day/National Indigenous People’s Day, in Calgary, Alberta for all who wish to attend.
