Obituary of Kirsty Harrett
HARRETT: Kirsty
Kirsty died peacefully in her 97th year surrounded by her loving family in Goderich, Ontario, on Monday, March 30, 2020.
Predeceased in 2008 by her beloved husband of 59 years, Dr. William Thomas Harrett of Clinton and Bayfield, Kirsty was the adored mother of Maggie Neil Dale (Ian) of Goderich, William Alexander Harrett (Sherri) of London, Alexander Robert Harrett (Carol) of Bayfield, and Kirsten Harrett (Rob) of Bayfield. Adored grandmother of Matthew Theoret of Bayfield, Jordan Harrett and Kaeley Harrett of London. Fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews, Lizann and Sheniel of England, Shona of South Africa, Moira of Australia, Doug and Andrew of Wales and England.
Kirsty was born to Alexander and Mabel Knowles in Dunblane, Scotland on May 6, 1923. She was the youngest of three daughters. Her sisters were Elizabeth Neil Knowles of Gargunnock, Scotland, and Margaret Miller of Hong Kong and London (UK).
Kirsty grew up in Aberdeen, Scotland, and then Northern Ireland before training as a nurse in hospitals in Edinburgh, York and Birmingham during WWII. Towards the end of the war, she met a quiet but persistent young Welsh officer from the Royal Army Medical Corps whom she married, and they moved to Wales where they practised medicine for 18 years.
In 1969, the family moved to Canada and took over a medical practice in Clinton where Kirsty worked alongside Bill serving the community for 25 years. Kirsty was a strong supporter and Past President of the Clinton Public Hospital Auxiliary and an active volunteer for the Epilepsy Foundation. Kirsty and Bill moved to Bayfield in 2007.
Kirsty and Bill loved to travel, and saw much of the world, visiting Asia, Africa, Europe, North and Central America. Kirsty remained an avid sports enthusiast following her years as an accomplished golfer and tennis player, and still loved to watch her favourite players on TV. Kirsty’s enjoyment of life was always a bright light, and a positive inspiration to those around her. With her great sense of fun, and always the quickest wit in the room, Kirsty was happiest with a glass of wine (or scotch), surrounded by her family and friends sharing hilarious stories.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Harbour Hill Retirement Suites in Goderich for the enriched and supportive environment they provided for Kirsty during her three years as a resident. The family would also like to thank Dr. Mike Dawson for his thoughtful ongoing care and advice.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Clinton Public Hospital Foundation (www.cphfoundation.ca) would be appreciated.
A private family funeral will be held and Kirsty will be laid to rest beside her beloved Bill in the Bayfield Cemetery.
