KENNEY MILES Gladys Doris 2020

KENNEY (MILES), Gladys Doris
December 13, 1927 – June 12, 2020
(Veteran of WWII where she proudly served as L/Cpl in the CWAC)
Peacefully passed in her sleep, at home, after courageously and successfully defeating three different cancers. Gladys was born in Okotoks, Ab. She developed a profound love for family after her own family was split apart for adoption early in life. She moved to Regina, SK to join the army where, despite normally being a reserved individual, she spent VE day riding around town sitting on the hood of a jeep. After leaving the army, she was on to Woodstock, Toronto, and Whitby, ON before finally settling in Oshawa, ON to work in the GM offices until she married. Mom was predeceased by Roy, her husband of 59 years with whom she raised their five children: David (Leslie), Marlena Jo (Dieter), Leanna (Ray), Adrienne (Ron), and Russell (Andrea). She treasured the addition of grandchildren to the family: Jeremiah, Zachariah, Joshua, Aaron, Rebekah, Katherine, Jeremy, Laura, Steven and her “adopted” granddaughter, Khaleesi. Mom was equally proud of her great-grandchildren who are almost too numerous to count…but she knew them all and had a story to tell and retell about each and every one – as she did for all her children and grandchildren. During these years she became a humble master of knitting, quilting, and crocheting. On family road trips, Mom’s knitting speed was known to match, or surpass, the speed of the car…and Dad’s foot was heavy on the pedal. However, throughout that entire time, she never forgot any of her siblings and spent the rest of her life searching…eventually, and joyfully, re-uniting with some of her long lost brothers and sisters: Earl, Jimmy, George, Bev and Carolyn. The word “cherish” falls short of describing the feelings Mom had for her family – and friends – and every single moment she had with any of them. Gentle and quiet in spirit, Mom always put the needs of everybody else ahead of her own much to the consternation of all at times. When not physically helping somebody, she was always thinking about how to help. Even when we did not know, she was helping. Mom even knew when her grandchildren were “stealing” treats from storage places and yet, oddly enough, those places were re-stocked with more treats on a regular basis (yes Aaron…she knew!). Most recently, Mom treasured her visits and “tea parties” with Khaleesi. We’re not sure if Mom was helping Khaleesi or if Khaleesi was helping Mom – the jury is still out on that one. In addition to her husband, Mom was predeceased by: her father Charles, mother Rose, brothers: Doug, Earl, and Jimmy and granddaughter Lillian, to name but a few. The family would like to thank the many people involved with Mom over the years – those friends who gave companionship, those who gave care and assistance, and those who gave it all. Most notably, Adrienne and Ron must be thanked for their singular devotion to Mom and her care and well-being over the past ten years. The word “family” absolutely defined Mom and from that word also springs “generous”. She generously gave to numerous charities and causes throughout her life but the one charity she held nearest and dearest in her heart above all others was One Hope Canada. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to One Hope Canada at onehopecanada.givingfuel.com/one-hope-canada-donation-page. Arrangements entrusted to McINTOSH-ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME LTD., 152 King St. E., Oshawa (905-433-5558). Online condolences can be shared at makfuneralhome.com.
