Kenneth Maxwell Mitchell
December 05, 1958 – September 12, 2020

On September 12, 2020, one of Newfoundland and Canada’s finest, Kenneth Maxwell Mitchell, passed away at the age of 61 at his home in Ottawa, Ontario. Ken (Kenny) was born and raised in Springdale, Newfoundland where he lived a zealous life full of mischief as a youngster (sisters know well) and throughout his lifetime. He was a star athlete and avid fan (Chicago Black Hawks) a great goaltender and teammate in a variety of sports (his favorites being hockey, soccer, and baseball. He and his Dad loved sports, the great outdoors hunting moose and rabbits, fishing for salmon and cod, boating, golfing and so much more. Ken’s favorite things to do were to have a feed of lobster, turrs, a scoff of jigs dinner, and fisherman’s brewis.

Ken worked as a young lad with his dad at Imperial Oil then George Warr Limited in Springdale and lived home until the age of 21. He and Brian Warr (Buss) remained best friends supporting one another throughout the years. Ken so loved the Warr, Rolfe, and Schwartz families (Eva’s favorite was Kenny Mitchell) and far too many to mention. You know who you are.

In September 1980 he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Force and was promoted to Sergeant before retiring in January, 2016 having served 35 years. At the onset of his career, he was inspired to join the RCMP Musical Ride touring our country with his well – loved horses Perky and Hazel where he became best friends with his roommate Marion Lamothe. He served as a special agent, braved intensive training with the United Nations for peacekeeping missions, and finished his career in Gander, NL then Head Office in Ottawa. While on mission in East Timor, with his buddy Floydie and the boys he toured the Aussie outback. They survived the adventure in the pleasure of his company with Kenny’s quick wit, endless stories and infectious laughter no matter what encounter they faced. His RCMP comrades remember him as a stalwart brother, a fine man, a true hero, and confidante. He was loved by all who knew him and maintained friendships over the years with many who were honoured to call him their friend. Special mention to police brothers Floydie and the boys, Marion, Smittie, Rejean, Steve, Dougie, Bryan, Deano, and Dale. Forgive us if we have missed anyone.

His last Mother Day card to our mom in his left-handwriting said, “Thank you for being my confidante, my friend, but mostly being my mother. I enjoy our chats with serious topics and Kenny stories blended in one. Love you babe. Always Kenny “

Ken was predeceased by his dad Maxwell Mitchell.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his mom Joan Mitchell; sisters Debbie (Don) Halifax, Nova Scotia, sister Donna, Grand Cayman; nephew Brad; niece Amy, and a large circle of Bursey and Mitchell relatives in Corner Brook (special mention Donnie J. and Roxanne).

His doggie Zekie will miss his daddy and is now living in Ontario with a family who owns three pugs and a Newfoundland retriever. Ken will be at rest knowing that.

A special mention to his brother-in-law Donnie Totten, who Ken called his Wingman for more than 20 years. They shared a love of sports, endless jokes, lobster, hockey and ball games in Ontario, and buying lottery tickets to name a few.

When watching sports, having a lobster boil, cracking a shell, having a barbecue, thinking of precious moments together, there will be an aching absence. Such was Kens spirit, however while the world feels a little darker with his parting, he would not want us to linger long but look ahead with his memory as a guiding light.

Newfoundland Proud!

Rest Easy Kenny!

Cremation has already taken place.

Please Note: A Celebration of Life Service will take place here in Springdale in the future, at a date yet to be determined.

Donations: In Kenny’s memory may be made to a local SPCA, minor hockey league, or an organization of your choosing.
