Keith William Smillie
Keith William Smillie passed away peacefully at the Gerald Zetter Care Centre in Edmonton on Tuesday August 4, 2020. Keith was born in London, Ontario on December 9, 1927. Keith spent his early years in Ontario, first in London and then in Toronto where he earned a Bachelor’s of the Arts degree in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Western Ontario, and later a Master’s and Doctorate Degree in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Toronto. Keith’s career started in the defense industry in Ottawa, which first led him to Alberta for the implementation of a computer system at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Cold Lake. Keith met his wife Natalie Chorneyko in Cold Lake, and after they were married settled briefly in Ottawa before moving to Edmonton in 1963. Keith ’s career in Edmonton was at the University of Alberta, as a Professor in the Department of Computing Science until his retirement in 1992. After his retirement, Keith remained active in the academic community. Keith is survived by his daughter Alison; son-in-law Lloyd; and grandchildren, Kyle, Maia, and Ryan.
