Kathleen (Dokitza) Mykytiuk (nee Bogdan) was born on March 14, 1927 at White Earth Creek near Edwand, Alberta to Katrina (Ratzoy) and Andrew Bogdan. She was the fourth of eight children and attended Volunteer School until the 8th grade and then completed the 10th grade in Edwand. In 1944, she moved to Vancouver with her older sister Mary and contributed to the war effort working at a sugar processing plant, as well as various other jobs.
She returned to Smoky Lake in 1954, met her husband Mike Mykytiuk and they were married in 1955. She was blessed with 5 children, Michael, Penny, Gerald, Leslie and Tom. She and Mike managed their general grocery store for many years. She enjoyed meeting all their customers and knew everybody in town and surrounding area, as the store was the gathering place for many of the farmers and town folk.
Kathleen was very active in her community, volunteering for the Woman’s Hospital Auxiliary, the Legion, Heritage Days, the Pumpkin Festival, Museum and various church groups and local committees. She was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal for outstanding service to the people of Alberta in 2005 for her community spirit and tireless efforts in building a better place to live.
Kathleen and Mike developed a strong interest in travel to broaden their worldview. She traveled extensively throughout Canada, United States, Cuba, Barbados, Mexico, Russia, and South Africa, experiencing different cultures, ways of living, museums and landscapes.
Kathleen was so well known that she was “Baba” to many families. She was a true humanitarian who valued every person she met. She had the uncanny ability to start conversations with anyone, and had a sincere interest in what they had to say. Her warm smile, gentle disposition, approachability and genuine interest in others inspired her family and friends to see the positive in all things and the optimism to embrace the joy of being human and live life to the fullest.
Her family will continue to celebrate her life and embrace her boundless spirit. We loved our mother greatly and will miss her deeply.
