Obituary
On a pleasant spring day, April 30th 2020, Kang Tong ‘Ken’ Lee peacefully passed away surrounded by his close family.
Ken was born in Canton, China from an inspiring father, Hin Ting Lee, and an adoring mother Wai Fong Wong. Ken was a fun-loving and rambunctious brother remembered by his five siblings: Lai Yu, Mo Ching, Chiu Fung, Chung Tong, and Lai Ming. He was admired by his brother-in-law, Fuk Cheung, Chau and respected by his son-in-law, Geoff Bullen. He was known as the mischievous uncle to his nieces and nephews.
Ken’s loyalty and dedication to his family is heartfully felt by his beloved wife, Elaine, and two daughters, Andrea and Magi. His pride and joy was supporting his family. He courageously moved his family from Hong Kong to Summerland, BC, Canada in order to build a better life. His bold and adventurous attitude brought forth a lifetime of laughs and excitement.
As an accomplished business owner, operator, and cook of Johnnie’s Family Restaurant, he served delicious Chinese food to our local community for more than fourteen years. He honored his traditional culture with a tightly knit group of Chinese-Canadian friends. He frequented the Auxiliary Thrift Store to find treasures and donated many carefully cultivated house plant cuttings. He embraced the challenge of any handyman work. His hardworking ethic led to an early retirement which gave him time for his hobbies of travelling, gardening, and cooking.
Ken particularly enjoyed playing badminton with his niece, Ellen, and hide and seek with his grandson, Sam. He enjoyed being active through biking, fencing, practicing Tai Chi, and even triumphantly attempting soccer. He was also a multiple gold medal winner for archery in the BC Senior Games Championship. His passion for healthy living was shared with camaraderie amongst all of his sport mates.
Ken held immense gratitude for the tender care received from Dr. Venkataraman as well as by every attending doctor and nurse at the Penticton Regional Hospital. Ken’s strength and kindness transpired with grace to his last moments with us.
Everyone knew Ken as a humble, generous, and all around “good man.”
