Joyce Lyons nee Jenkins 19352020

Joyce Lyons (nee Jenkins)
1935-2020
Joyce Lyons (nee Jenkins) was born to the late Rowan
“Ted” and Ethel B. (Dunn) Jenkins in Murray Harbour
on November 18, 1935. She spent the first nine years of her life in
Murray River. She lost her father when she was two years old and her
mother when she was nine. She and two of her sisters were taken in by
close relatives Lester and Mae (Jenkins) Beck who raised them in
Summerside, PE.
As a young woman, Joyce went off to
Hamilton, ON to be near two older sisters. She went to Business
College there, graduated, then returned to PEI to work as a medical
secretary.
In 1956, she married Morton, a bright young RCAF
from Yarmouth, NS, stationed in Summerside, PE. Over the years his
postings took them to St. John’s, NF; Lahr and
Baden-Soellingen, Germany; Dartmouth, NS; Miramichi, NB; and
Greenwood, NS. At the end of his military career, they settled among
her relatives in Murray Harbour.
Joyce is
survived by Morton, her husband of 64 years and a sister Hope (Brian)
MacLennan of Burlington, ON. She leaves five daughters of whom she was
very proud: Heather (Wayne) Brodland of Waterloo, ON; Jill (Wayne)
Harris of Murray Harbour, PE; Diana (Michael) Jenkins of Miramichi,
NB; Deborah (Gary) Sioen of Grandview, PE, and Becky (David) Byrne of
Morrell, PE, and ten grandchildren; Ben Brodland, Blake (Annie)
Brodland, Dana Harris, Kiri (Bryan) LaRue , Kassandra (Frederic)
Paillard, Brandan Jenkins, Cam Sioen, Gaby Sioen, Maggie Byrne and
Shaymus Byrne. She has five great-grandchildren: Callie, Susan,
Brielle, Jacob and Stella. She was predeceased by her sisters Ferne
(Owen) Palmer, Kay (Louis) MacDonald and Eleanor (Jack)
Anderson.
Joyce
was an avid seamstress and knitter, making beautiful clothes for her
five daughters and herself. She loved to bake and garden, teaching
these skills to her children. She and her home were always neat, tidy
and attractive. Joyce took great pleasure in family connections,
pointing out near and distant relatives and where they fit into the
family tree. Church involvement was high on her list of priorities.
She sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, led Bible studies and
regularly attended prayer meetings. She was in leadership roles with
Christian Women’s Club and World Day of Prayer.
Joyce studied her Bible by the hour because she placed high value on
what God has to say, and loved her family and her Lord.
