JOSEPHINE MILLEN
(nee GARRIOCH)
1950 – 2020
It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Josephine Millen on Monday, September 21, 2020 at the age of 70 years at Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, with her daughters at her side.
Josephine is survived by her husband, John, her daughter Alia (Eric), and grandchildren Arya and Emmett, and her daughters Faye (William) and Tessa (Jeremy). She was predeceased by her son, Kelvin, 2005.
Josephine was born in Cross Lake, Manitoba in 1950 to parents Happyjack and Eliza Garrioch. She grew up in Cross Lake, with her three sisters, Betsy, Agnes, and Pauline, and four brothers, Daniel, Isiah, Peter, and Joseph. Three other siblings were lost at early ages. Josephine was very helpful to her family members and worked in other’s homes, assisting with childcare. She also worked at the Cross Lake Nursing Station. Josephine played fastball, women’s hockey, and began curling, later in life. With her husband, John, she left Cross Lake nearly 40 years ago, moving to Repulse Bay, NWT (Nunavut), returning to Cross Lake, and later moved to Bissett and finally to Winnipeg.
Mom loved her children and grandchildren so very much. She paid attention to every detail. In the last years, thoughts of her family and her grandchildren filled each day. She was a loving wife, always.
Josephine loved sharing recipes and baking with and for her family, renowned for her almond cakes, a perfectionist in her own way! She enjoyed many things in life. Television was her window to classic and quality films, with a special interest in the British programs, Coronation Street, Downton Abbey, and many well known series. Josephine closely followed both men’s and women’s Canadian curling teams, following all of the teams for years, as well as our Jets and Blue Jays. She read and browsed the newspaper each day. She loved the outdoors and everything in it, and a quiet campfire. And she kept her sense of humour.
Josephine was beautiful. She truly loved her children and family. We all loved her back. She would sometimes quietly and proudly say, “I think in Cree.” Beautiful. She was such a strong person. She never forgot any of her family nor people from throughout her entire life. She continually looked forward toward Christmas celebrations, visits, and every family moment throughout each year. She brought us together, always. We love her and we will miss her.
We would like to thank The Rheumatology Clinic HSC, The Movement Disorder Clinic Winnipeg, Dr. Bacily, family doctor, and Care at Home Pharmacy Winnipeg for their care, also The Grace Hospital doctors and all staff, Emergency and Floor 3 South.
