John Marvin George Dahl
John Marvin George Dahl passed away on August 20, 2020, at the age of 93. John spent almost his entire life in Whitecourt, Alberta, and over the years filled many roles both locally and provincially. In addition to owning an oilfield construction company, a central feature of his life was community service. At the age of 39 he was elected to the Town of Whitecourt Council, becoming its first mayor a few years later. He served on Alberta Government boards and committees including the Alberta Human Tissue Procurement Task Force and the Native Venture Capital Company. He was a director of the Alberta Municipalities Association, director of the Alberta Roadbuilders Association, and on the board of the first Lions Eye Bank in Alberta. He chaired the Whitecourt Airport Commission, was part of Whitecourt’s first volunteer fire department, a founding member of the Whitecourt Lions Club, a charter member of the Rotary Club, and a Master Mason with the Whitecourt Lodge. A founding patron of the Heritage Community Foundation, John for many years was President of the Whitecourt and District Heritage Society and was proud to have been involved in the Society’s construction of the Whitecourt Forest Interpretive Centre and Heritage Park. He was named Whitecourt’s citizen of the year twice and was the recipient of several medals for outstanding community service.
John is survived by two daughters, Sherry Dahl and Lori Dahl; son, John Dahl (Sheila); four grandchildren, Amber Marsh (Sean), Colin Regamey (Anuar), Kevin Regamey (Zoe) and Robert McAlister; and great-grandchildren, Alexander Marsh and Amelia Marsh.
He was predeceased by his wife, Audrey Dahl (nee Herd); parents, John and Clara Dahl; brother, Gilbert Dahl; and sister, Christina Callihoo (nee Dahl).
The family wishes to express gratitude to Dr. Bablitz, Dr. Beyers, Dr. Aird, Dianne Gregory, Doug Ling and the staff of the Whitecourt Hospital, the Mayerthorpe Auxiliary Hospital Long-term Care, and the Spruceview Lodge.
There will be a Celebration of John’s Life Saturday, September 5 at 2:00 p.m. at the Whitecourt United Church, 5201 – 50 Street, Whitecourt. For those unable to attend, the service will be live-streamed at www.parkmemorial.com. Following the service, the street outside the church will be blocked off for open-house-style socializing and offering condolences by both those who attend indoors and those who do not. COVID-19 precautions will be in place inside and outside. Please bring your own mask. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Whitecourt and District Heritage Society, CNIB, Canadian Cancer Society, or Diabetes Canada.

John ( Sheila ) and family on the passing of their father ( grandfather) John Dahl. Over the past eight decades John was a family friend to not only myself but also to my past wife Bernice (Bain). What a legacy you have left .. you will be sorrowful missed. Bye John .
