Obituary for Mr. John “Jack” Walter Nixon
John (Jack) Walter Nixon passed away peacefully at the Amica Little Lake residence in Barrie, Ontario, on June 4, 2020 at the age of 94 years. He is Predeceased by his loving wife Betty, his sister Audrey (Jack) his brother Ross (Linda, Catherine – predeceased) and his parents, James
and Cassie. Jack is survived by his son John (Jane) and daughters Karen
(Ed) and Patsy (Tony). He was a generous and loving grandfather to
Mike (Cathy), James (Lee), Nishka (Neil), Kayla (Phillip), Rachel, Rebecca
(Simon), and Natasha (Josh). Jack is also survived by 12 great
grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces.
Jack was born in Barrie on March, 16, 1926 and attended Barrie
Collegiate Institute where he developed a love of music and played
trumpet in the band (and on weekends). He was a multi-sport athlete in
basketball, track, rifle shooting, and a star football quarterback, leading
the team to the Central Ontario Secondary School Association
championship. Apart from school, Jack was a star hockey player, curler
and golfer. His long list of achievements include the O.M.H.A Juvenile
“B” Championship (1942) with the Barrie Lions Juveniles, skipping the
Barrie rink to their first Ontario Curling Championship (1963)- Governor
General’s,
Jack has won more golf club championships and trophies than any
other Barrie Golfer to date and is also the official course record holder
the lowest score at the old Barrie Golf course on Sunnidale Road. For
his accomplishments and contributions Jack was recognized by The
Barrie Country Club a few years back with a Lifetime Membership.
After high school, and his father’s death, Jack was successful in writing
the licensing requirements and became one of the youngest insurance
brokers in Canada at the time. His insurance and entrepreneurial
careers spanned close to 80 years. Jack was a community leader,
serving as a Director and President of The Barrie Country, The Barrie
Curling Clubs, and The Barrie Collegiate Band. He was also the founding
president of the Little Lake Flying Club. Jack loved flying, and took
family and friends fishing throughout Northern Canada and the Artic.
Jack was blessed with a happy and positive outlook on life, a
tremendous work ethic, a remarkable memory, and great generosity.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Amica, led by Melissa
Sample and Dr. David Bouchy for their compassionate care. Special
thanks, as well, to Dr. Fred Strangway and his office for their excellent
medical care over the 40 +years.
Do to the Covid 19, In lieu of a service, Jack will be remembered
through a broadcast by Alberta Radio station CKUA.com. Details
including time, date with links attached TBA on this site in the coming
week. CKUA will dedicate this broadcast to Jack’s memory with some of
his favorite music.
