He is survived by his three children, Jamie (Stacey) Hewitt of Winnipeg, Leigh (Colin) Hogue of Portage la Prairie, Johnny Hewitt of Brandon, his children’s mother Debbie, brother Bill (Sharon) Hewitt of Brandon, sister Jo-Anne (Larry) Radics of Brandon, sister Betsy (Alvin) Suchoplas of Winnipeg, four grandkids James, Kira, Ty and Tori, nieces and nephews Derek, Kara-Lynne, Shauna, Gordie, Patsy, Chad, Cori, Crystal, Karen Ann, Branon, Landon, Branelle, William, Paige, Kaitie, Garick, and numerous other extended family. John will also be missed by his good friends Grant Francombe and George Miller and all his hockey brother-in-arms from the Portage Terrier ‘72-73 Centennial Cup champs. He is predeceased by his parents Henry James and Donalda Hewitt and nephew Richard.
John was born and raised in Virden, Manitoba on April 13, 1953, and moved to Portage la Prairie when he was sixteen to play hockey for the junior A Terriers. He later married and raised his family in the Portage la Prairie and Oakville communities where he coached hockey, raced horses, fished, and hunted. He took great pride in his 38 year career at the Manitoba Developmental Centre and it made John especially happy to refocus his retirement energies with the Terrier Alumni. This included billeting his nephew Garrick Gray and friend Grant Valiquette during their succession of his own accomplishment, to win the RBC Cup in 2015. He enjoyed watching his grandkids play and offering his coaching advice to all hockey players and parents who would listen, family, friends and strangers alike.
