Joan Dorothea Murphy
January 04, 1924 – July 23, 2020
Passed peacefully away on Thursday, July 23rd, 2020 age 96 years. Predeceased by her parents Edward and Elizabeth Duff; her beloved husband Andrew and infant son; her sisters Molly, Alice, Mercedes, Edna, Betty and brothers Jim, Val, Jerry, Don and Kevin. Joan was the last surviving sibling of the Duff family. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her children Elizabeth Gorman (Wayne), Andrew (Tania), Robert (Jennie), Gerard/Chuck (Jacquie) and Mary Bruneau (Steve); her grandchildren David and Laura Bruneau; Andrew, Colin, Liam, Meghan and Luke Murphy, and her large extended family on both the Duff and Murphy sides. She was always so grateful for the love and support of her special nieces Joan Burke, Mary Barton and Anne Maher who were like her own. Joan grew up in St. John’s, first on Monroe Street and then at Duff’s farm on Oxen Pond Road. She married and moved to Freshwater Road raising her own family there while supporting Andy with the family business Murphy’s Service Station. Joan was devoted to her family and was a spiritual woman who found comfort in her faith. She endeared herself to countless people with her sincerity and humor, selflessness and compassion. She volunteered for a number of years at St. Clare’s Palliative Care Unit and The Gathering Place. Deepest thanks are extended to her care family at Tiffany Village, many of whom became lovingly attached to Joan in her latter years. Visitation will take place Sunday July 26th, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Funeral Mass to take place on Monday July 27th at 1:00 PM from St. Teresa’s Church, Mundy Pond Road. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre cemetery.
