Jean Frydenlund 1919 2020

Obituary of Jean Frydenlund
Following a happy and well-lived life, Jean (Allwood) Frydenlund died peacefully the evening of January 5, 2020. The only child of John and Dorothy Allwood, Jean was born at home, March 30, 1919 in Saskatoon. A proud graduate of Nutana Collegiate and Saskatoon Normal School, Jean embarked on a teaching career that took her to one room schools in rural Saskatchewan. It was in Lost River that she caught the eye of Juel Frydenlund. They married in June, 1943 and began their life together in Trenton, Ontario where Jean found employment in a dressmaking shop while Juel served in the RCAF. Returning to Saskatchewan at the end of WWII, they farmed in the South Allan district for over 50 years. Mom and Dad relocated to Saskatoon where they continued to show the warm hospitality that was their trademark. Jean was well-known and appreciated wherever she lived for her active participation and leadership in the community being involved in organizations such as the Happy Gang, Sunny Valley, Hanley and Zion Lutheran congregations, Home and School, Oratory and Public Speaking , 4-H, and Memory Writers. She was skilled in homemaking, dressmaking, knitting, writing and she enjoyed gardening. Always proud of her own English heritage, she embraced Juel’s Norwegian roots, learning enough of the language to make Dad proud of her efforts when they visited relatives in Norway. As a family, we are left with amazing stories of the people with whom she shared her life journey. As an only child, she loved her relationships with cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents, and was especially happy to be part of the large Frydenlund family. In the Allwood/Avery families she was the last of her generation. Long-time connections through letters between friends made at Normal School, and friends from her parents’ lives and beyond have remained familiar names and in some cases the correspondence has continued into the next generation. Jean is lovingly remembered by her daughter Margaret (Viktor) Fast and children, Karl (Samantha) and their son Niles Fast; David Fast (Crystal Peters); and Peter (Marie) and their children Alexander, Elliott and Isla Fast; son Karsten (Shirley) and children Kiersten (Roy) and their children Kymberly and William Kirkpatrick; Severin (Jaime) and their daughters Tova and Solveigh Frydenlund, and son Halvor. Jean was predeceased by her husband Juel in 2018 and her grandson Jordan in 2017. The family is very appreciative of the kindnesses extended to all of our mother’s caregivers; at Riverside Terrace and at Sherbrooke Community Centre where she lived in House 5 for the final two years of her life, she will be remembered for her ready wit and wisdom, her enjoyment in singing, and her stories. The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Zion Lutheran Church, 323 4th Avenue S. Memorial donations may be made to Allan Community Heritage Society and Museum, Box 235, Allan, SK S0K 0C0 or to a charity of choice.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Jean
