It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother ELSIE JEAN LABINE. Mom passed away peacefully on March 20,2020 at the Lakeside Manor Care Home in Saltcoats SK. She was eighty-nine years old. Better known as Jean to family and friends, Mom was born on July 25, 1930, the first child of Edward and Elsie (nee Daniels) Dunkin in St Paul, AB. She was raised in north central Alberta. Mom worked at the St. Louis Hospital in the kitchen in Bonnyville, AB. It was there that the nuns at the hospital encouraged Mom to take the Nurses Aid course. Mom upgraded her education via correspondence and then enrolled at the Nursing Aid School in Calgary. After graduating in 1953 she began her career at the Aberhart Memorial Hospital in Edmonton. In 1951 at her sister’s wedding to Earl LaBine, Mom met her future husband Melvin LaBine. During their time in Edmonton they were happy to see their family grow with four children. Melvin worked water and sewer construction in various towns across the prairies. The summer of 1962 his work was in Saltcoats. Mom brought the children to enjoy the lake during the summer and decided to stay. They were blessed with two more children completing the family. Mom loved the small town feel, the beauty of the lake and the friendly, welcoming people. She was happy to be settled to raise the family of six. What wonderful memories we all have with homemade baking, a clean house, new homemade clothes, Sunday drives and berry picking. Mom played a huge part in her children’s lives, raising her family gave her the most joy! After all the children left home, Mom returned to the workforce by securing a job at the Lakeside Manor Care Home. She really enjoyed her time there and made many friends. Mom was a caregiver… to her siblings, her own children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, within her chosen career and community children. She was a remarkable letter writer to family and friends. As you read her letters it felt like you were sitting at the kitchen table having morning coffee with her.Mom also enjoyed other activities including curling, sewing, knitting, crocheting, baking and all sorts of crafts. There was not a time that her hands were idle. She knit many preemie hats for the NICU babies at the hospitals in Yorkton, Regina and Edmonton. She was an active volunteer in the community. Mom’s dream to travel to New Zealand was realized in 1991 when she traveled there with Owen and Sharee. She went to Expo 86 in Vancouver with Denise and traveled to Victoria, Ontario to stay in her grandparents homestead with Bonny and Jaklyn in 2007. Mom was an extraordinary individual, especially when you consider everything she had endured. She left us quickly and peacefully. Mom was at peace with herself as she passed away in Saltcoats, Saskatchewan, her home for 58 years. She was devoted to her family. Left to miss, yet remember her often, her children Douglas (Annette); Gregory (Jeannie); Vance; Bonita; Denise (Ole) and Owen (Sharee); her grandchildren Ronda (Phil); Melanie (Ryan); Mallory (Mike); Trevor; Jeanette (Chris); Michaela (Ken); Jaklyn (Will); Taralyn (Al); Colton; Erik; Shanai(Dawson);Adrianna (Jackson); Rebecca (Douglas) Jennifer. She cherished her great grandchildren Taylor, Dylan,Maxim, Surya and Frankie; her sister Lillian LaBine, brothers Edward and Russell Dunkin; sister in laws Mary Anne Dunkin; Kathleen Hibbs and Adeline (Bill) Halverson; numerous nieces and nephews and community friends. Predeceased by great grandson Triston; brother Raymond; sister Betty, ex-husband Melvin and many in laws. Celebration of Life for Jean will be on Saturday, August 1,2020 at 1:30 pm at Christie’s Funeral Home and Crematorium in Yorkton, SK. Ceremony will be live streamed on the Facebook page. Private family Interment of the ashes will be at Saltcoats Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Lakeside Manor Care Home in Saltcoats, SK.
