Jean’s Obituary
While thankful for such a long and healthy life, it remains with great sadness the family of Jean Frances Blaikie (Dickie) announce her sudden passing, early in the morning of December 12th, after a brief and unexpected illness.
That sadness is tempered by the sure and certain knowledge that the moment she left us she was welcomed home by her Lord and Saviour in Heaven, reunited with husband Donald, her son Ralph, her granddaughter Marni and daughter-in-law Heather. What a joyous moment that would have been!
Born in Truro, NS, on June 27th, 1929, she married our Dad Donald Blaikie in 1946 and they started their family building a new home in Bible Hill, with Mom working at the Stork Shop and Dad at Blaikies, the family Chrysler dealership. John and Ralph always fondly recalled those early days watching Mom and Dad both race stock cars at tracks in the local area (and many who drove with Mom, even in recent years, would say she liked to relive those days each time she was behind the wheel!) In 1958 Dad answered the call into the United Church ministry and Mom became a great support for his ministry in pastoral charges in NS and NB, teaching Sunday school, CGIT groups and undertaking all the many tasks of a minister’s wife in those days. As her younger children grew older, she took up another career working at the newly opened East Cumberland Lodge while Dad was serving his final pastoral charge before his retirement, in Wallace, NS, where they also chose to spend their final years.
Jean, or Grammie B, as she was referred to by many, was the most wonderful Mom and Grandmother. Bright, funny, loving, and always interested in how every single family member was doing. Mom was the very definition of a Mother and Grandmother – she loved without judgement and always listened with understanding. She was our solid anchor in all the storms of life, and we all clung to her at one time or another. She was the keeper of all family knowledge, had an amazing memory dating back decades of whose who in our family and community. Up to date on all things, devourer of the news and political books and biographies. Cookie baker extraordinaire. Strong lady of faith, and a real example of what that faith meant. Mom truly lived a caring Christian life that greatly impacted all around her.
Mom loved her cottage in Fox Harbour and she and Dad made that a beacon which drew in all our extended family from far and wide. Many summers were filled with beautiful flowers, wonderful family gatherings, laughter and the love of being together at the shore. None of us will ever forget those times. Mom was never happier than when surrounded by her family and especially so when holding the newest little addition as she got to do again this summer, and was anxiously awaiting the latest two we have coming in the next few months. She was a gem, and will truly be missed beyond measure.
Jean is survived by sons John (Rita), Alden (Helen), Peter. Daughter-in-law Gail (James). Grandsons Jamie (Sandee), Marc(Jill), Chris (Xisra), Erick (Jennifer), Matthew (Rachel), Jeffrey, William, Cameron, Sam. Granddaughters Melissa (Fraser), Emilie (Joel), Floyd Erin (Glen), Katherine, Hannah. Great grandchildren Michael (Lindsay), Gavin, Braden, Tristen, Hannah (Lucas), Sarah, Elizabeth, Paige, Johnathan, Jack, Alex, Lucas, Danika, Owen, Avery, Olive, Spencer Jean. Great great grandchildren Astraea, Harper.
Jean was pre deceased by husband Donald, son Ralph, granddaughter Marni, daughter-in-law Heather, and all six of her siblings.
Cremation has taken place, and when the pandemic restrictions allow the family will gather at St Johns United Church in Wallace for her funeral service, lay her to rest next to Dad and Heather in St Andrews United Church cemetery in Fox Harbour, then gather at our cottage on the shore for a celebration of this remarkable life.
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine
O what a foretaste of glory divine
Heir of salvation, purchase of God
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood
The Widow’s Offering
Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
