Janet C. Cluff
1946-2020
Janet Claudine Cluff, formerly of Centreville, NB, passed in the most
peaceful way surrounded by her family and some close friends at her
beloved cottage at Skiff Lake, NB, on a sunny afternoon. Born January
20, 1946 in Woodstock, NB, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and
Mildred (Chase) Lamoreaux. She was predeceased by 2 brothers in law:
Rankine Smith and Charles “Charlie” Russell.
Born into the loving care of Arthur & Mildred, Janet grew up on
the family farm in Greenfield with her sisters. She quickly learned
the value of a hard day’s work and the spirit of collaboration.
She came of age and chose to pursue a career path matching her natural
tendency toward nurturing, care, empathy and compassion, traits she
had seen exhibited by her own mother all her life.
It was while studying to become a nurse and later going on to work in
hospital in children’s ward that she first came to know her
future husband. Janet & Frank were married and it was in the
early years of the lives of their sons that the family’s
connection to Skiff Lake was strengthened and solidified. Being a
supportive and loving wife and mother were among her greatest joys.
She balanced it all with the maintenance of a social life which
fostered numerous long-term friendships, and she truly became a
treasured friend to many.
When her boys grew old enough, she returned to the working world as a
Registered Nurse in a reception role within the family practices of a
series of physicians in Florenceville. From her work with Dr.
Altenkirk to her days with Dr. Tompkins, she provided an exceptional
level of care and service to patients in need.
Her retirement years with Frank were so obviously earned and deserved,
and they divided their time between Centreville and Skiff Lake. After
enjoying a European vacation, they were able to realize their dream of
wintering in Florida, and there Janet continued to make extraordinary
impressions on strangers. These impressions inevitably led to further
expansion of her friendship circle.
A sense of loss is being felt far beyond Carleton County, perhaps most
notably in Newfoundland and Ontario where her sons live. The
grandchildren in her life were likely the high-water mark of
fulfillment and accomplishment in her heart. Although her wit,
perception and patience never faltered, it is truly tragic that their
time with her has been cut short by such wretched illness. May they
remember her winning recipes, and may we all remember her love of
laughter.
Special thanks to Dr. O’Connell and the team at Stan Cassidy,
and Dr. Ghanem, as well as the tireless staff on the Extra-Mural team,
who made countless trips to join Frank at Skiff Lake to attend to
Janet’s needs.
Janet is survived by Frank, her beloved husband of 50 years; 2 sons:
David Cluff (Anna) and Peter Cluff (Michelle Isaacs); 2 grandchildren:
Marisa and Noah; 3 sisters: Esther Smith, Marion Russell and Linda
Burtt (Robert), as well as several nieces, nephews and extended
family.
