James’ Obituary
It is with great sadness that Jim’s family announces his passing on Saturday, August 15, 2020. Jim was born on November 18, 1945 in West Vancouver, BC. He grew up in both Moose Jaw, SK and West Vancouver, BC. Jim attended the University of British Columbia where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1968. After UBC Jim spent time travelling through Europe and Asia. He often talked to his kids about his days at the Club Vagabond in Lysin, Switzerland where he skied, climbed, and built on his love for the mountains. In around 1970, Jim moved to Whistler where he lived and skied. Jim would regale his kids with stories of when Whistler consisted of only the Creekside Gondola, the Red Chair, and a t-bar near to what is now the Peak Chairlift. Jim was one of the first 1,000 members of Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC)! Jim pursued a Master of Arts degree in Asian Studies and Buddhism at the University of Saskatchewan between 1973 and 1975. Jim returned to Vancouver in 1976 where he met Rae before they were married in 1978. Jim and Rae moved to Dawson Creek, BC where Jim began his career as a Chartered Accountant and Jim and Rae started their family (Jim Jr., 1979, Beth, 1982). Jim threw himself into the community, and amongst other volunteer activities was at one time simultaneously presidents of the local Minor Hockey, Lacrosse, Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Clubs. Many wonderful friends and memories were made in Dawson Creek, where they enjoyed going to country dances, socializing with wonderful friends at an informal bridge club, and playing (and socializing) with the Dawson Creek Oldtimers Hockey Club. In 1991 Jim and his young family moved to Moose Jaw where he was the Secretary Treasurer at Moose Jaw School Division No. 1 from 1991 to approximately 2010. Jim was again active in the community, where he founded the Moose Jaw minor lacrosse club, was on the board of the WHL Moose Jaw Warriors for a brief stint and coached local minor hockey teams, which included a Pee Wee AA provincial championship in 1992. Jim ended his career teaching accounting at Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST). In retirement, Jim pursued his love of the outdoors where he could be found most mornings dog training with friends and his beloved Labrador retriever Sunny. Right up until the final year, and in fact weeks, of his life, Jim was an avid mountain biker, skier, hiker, duck hunter and fly fisherman. Jim was a voracious reader but his greatest love in the final years of his life was spending time with his kids and grandkids including annual winter’s spent skiing and enjoying the mountains at a seasonal rental cabin in Canmore, AB. Jim dedicated his life to his family, the community and his work. He was passionate about everything that he did and was never known to take a shortcut or do anything less than his best. Jim passed away on August 15, 2020 after a brief battle with cancer. Jim is survived by his wife Rae, sister Joan (Bill), kids: Jim (Natasha), Beth (John) and grandkids: Henry, Anna, Camilla, and Louise. He will be dearly missed. Jim’s wish was there not be a funeral, and in lieu of flowers or a donation he would want people to go spend time outdoors with a loved one and remember him fondly. In living memory of Jim, a memorial planting will be made by Jones-Parkview Funeral Services. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com or www.parkviewfuneralchapel.ca (Obituaries). Kelly Scott, Funeral Director.
