Obituary
SANDER, James “Jim”
James “Jim” Michael Sander passed away peacefully on December 6, 2020 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Jim was born May 5, 1943 in Wilkie, SK to Fred and Lena Sander, the first of two boys in a family of sisters who doted on their little brothers. Jim went to school in Wilkie at McLurg and later St. George and had a lifelong love of reading, often scoffing at the rest of us when we couldn’t finish multiple books in a week. In 1968 Jim married Elaine Hungnes and the two would be inseparable for the next 52 years, ending with Elaine holding his hand in his final moments of life. Over those years, Jim and Elaine had four girls and ten grandchildren who were the pride and delight of Jim’s life. Jim loved nothing better than to sit with his grandchildren and read a story or teach them to build or fix something. Jim enjoyed being part of a large family and the love and bustle of activity that brought. He was a kind and caring uncle to 37 nieces and nephews and he relished a family reunion or any chance to tell a joke, visit and laugh with his extended clan. Jim served 35 years with United Grain Growers in various roles in Leinan, Success, Fox Valley, Wilkie, Saskatoon and Davidson. He loved to tell stories of his days in the elevator and passed on his values of loyalty and hard work to his children and grandchildren. A strong believer in helping out wherever he was needed, Jim devoted many years to coaching, the Knights of Columbus, and various boards and committees. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Elaine, his four daughters Joanne (Greg) Sutherland, Leanne (John) McGettigan, Jennifer (Joel) Mann, Karen (Nathan) Thomson, his grandchildren Brittney (Garrett) Lange, Derek (Chelsea) Sutherland, Megan Sutherland, Simon and Owen Mann, Seamus and Grace McGettigan, Luke, Paul and Seth Thomson; sisters Mary Schmidt, Kay Frey, Betty (Albert) Weber, Theresa (Pete) Weber, Wilma (George) Heisler and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Lena Sander, his brother Philip, sisters Magdalena and Annie; in-laws Lars and Alice Hungnes, Anna (Chester) Potter, Judith (Ormond) Klaassen, Eleanor (Davie) Wotherspoon; Val Schmidt and Alfred Frey. A Private Funeral Mass will be held for immediate family. Arrangements in care of Chelsea Krentz – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
