Obituary
It is with broken hearts that the family of Jim Mortimer of Saint John, NB announce his death, following a brief illness, at the Saint John Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit on Monday Aug. 24, 2020.
Born Sept. 2, 1928, in Whitney Pier, Sydney, NS, to the late Munden and Phoebe (Paddick) Mortimer, Jim was a graduate of Sydney Academy in 1947. He worked his summers delivering milk by horse and wagon for Cape Breton Dairies. After graduating he worked in the Dominion Coal Company’s General Office as a mail boy, studying his way up to their Data Processing department. In 1965 he moved his young family to Saint John, NB, where he worked for various branches of the Irving Company, and later Baxter Dairies, becoming their Data Processing Manager until retirement in 1990. Jim was an active member of Portland United Church. He loved music and sang in church choirs, music festivals, and choral productions until the age of 90. As a volunteer Jim delivered Meals on Wheels for 25 years; he also played the piano for the patients and families at the SJRH Palliative Care Unit and the weekly hospital chapel services for many years. Jim was a member of the Saint John Art Club, displaying his works through them and in four solo shows. Jim was a kind and caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Ina (MacEachern) Mortimer of Saint John and their precious children Paul in Saint John and Nancy in Haileybury. Jim will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Alex (Emma) in Taipei, Chris (Kate) in Waterloo, Heather (David) in Calgary, and Benjamin (Valentina) in Guelph. He will also be sorely missed by his great-grandchildren Lizzie, Thomas, Hanna, Robert, Sarah, James, and Damon. Jim also leaves to mourn his brother Stuart Mortimer in Toronto; sisters-in-law Gloria O’Dea, Carolyn Marchand (Louis), and Mabel MacEachern in Sydney; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Along with his parents, Jim was predeceased by his precious stillborn son Stephen James; his brothers Sidney, Fraser, and Ray; his sisters Gladys Ross and Ruby McVicar; and several brothers and sisters-in-law, in Sydney and Toronto.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Rd. (506) 646-2424. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at Portland United Church, 50 Newport Cres. Saint John, NB, on Friday Sept. 18, 2020 @ 11am. Due to the pandemic, attendance is limited to 60 pre-reserved seats. Please RSVP Fundy Funeral Home @ info@fundyfuneralhome.com or call (506)646-2424. Face masks are required to attend the service. Interment will be in Sydney, NS at a later date, details to follow.
