Obituary for James Edward Flux
April 8, 1944 – December 28, 2019
James Edward Flux passed away peacefully December 28, 2019. Like any other family, we are profoundly saddened by his loss, but we must take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and condolences. Starting with the EMT’s who attended to Dad and transported him to the Royal Columbian Hospital, where the ICU team saw to his (and our) every need. We thank you for your extreme care and compassion.
Dad had a way about him, an outgoing and ever-playful demeanor – not to mention shameless flirting – that was often rewarded with stellar service and new friends everywhere he went.
Dad was a born and bred BC boy, he lived in many places in BC; from Nanaimo to Prince George and oh-so many communities in between. Raised in Whalley (Surrey) with his best friend and older brother, David Flux, they were inseparable until David joined the Navy. Uncle David, thank you for everything. You were/are Dad’s North star.
Dad started his first career in grocery with Safeway, later owning a Super Valu in Merritt; when – coincidently – he owned a stake in the Merritt Centennials Hockey team for a spell. It was during this time Jim had married his first wife, Brenda Duncan, and they started a family welcoming James Jr. and Lisa into the world.
Dad eventually went from filling cupboards with groceries to selling cupboards, as he embarked on a career in selling, designing, and installing kitchens. This would be the bulk of his career, of which he was quite proud and had many stories he loved to share. He created lifelong friendships with colleagues and customers and was grateful to work with his son, Jim Jr. for many years. Dad travelled extensively, including Japan, the Philippines, Guam and all-over North America.
In the late 90’s, Dad met Karen Kirsh and fell in love. Soon after he added to his family when Karen and Dad wed in 1998. Dad loved being a part of a big BIG family and was delighted to count Ryan Roch as his stepson. For many years Dad and the entire family, grand children Evan and Kyle now on the scene, enjoyed annual trips to Lac le Hache for fishing, visiting, and laughing over stories old and new.
We are forever thankful to Karen, Ryan, Kiddo and Brian, Verna and John and Irv plus so so many other family members – for their friendship and kinship. We also take this moment to thank Karen, Dad‘s best friend and partner in crime, for infinite patience and tireless care. On behalf of Dad, how can we adequately express our love and gratitude?
Dad was a bona-fide mush pot and loved his animals, simply too many to mention over the years – but all beloved and all who loved Dad. Dad was ferociously proud of his three kids and two grand kids and avidly followed step-nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and the adventures of family and friends with delight.
Dad loved good food, good drink, belly laughs and GREAT BIG hugs. He loved to read. He loved to watch histo-fiction and was always up for a game of cards or a puzzle. Dad loved music and to dance. Man, he could DANCE! Dad loved a smart joke but shone with the Dad-jokes. He never missed an opportunity to turn a phrase.
Dad wasn’t one to complain and was always willing to lend a hand or ear. He was a hard worker and a loyal man. He loved many, maligned very few and was truly a good soul.
