Jim learned the electrical trade from George, his father, rewiring farm buildings to electric from the Delco battery systems previously installed by George. He then worked in Kincardine and St. Marys as an electric serviceman and on a blind date met and fell in love with Betty. In 1953 they married and moved to Stratford where he worked at the P.U.C. as a serviceman and then a lineman.
Jim and his business partner opened Avon Electric Wholesale, which they operated successfully until selling to Ideal Supply in 1982. He spent his early retirement keeping busy with a Bed and Breakfast business near Mitchell. He loved to help his family and friends, he could fix almost anything and always liked to have a project on the go.
Dad was a kind man with a strong sense of fairness and an insatiable sweet tooth. His mantra was “If you have your health you have everything”. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or London Health Sciences Foundation directly or online through the James A. Rutherford Funeral Home / Rutherford Cremation & Funeral Services at www.jarfh.com, or by calling 519-271-5062.
