James Alexander Richard
1937-2020
Richard, James Alexander – Age
83 of Hureauville, Richmond County, died peacefully on Monday, July
20, 2020, in the Port Hawkesbury Nursing
Home.
James was the eldest sibling and left school at an early age
to help support the family household. Throughout his life
James worked as an operating engineer on many types of
equipment. He began with the City of Halifax where he and
Bernice lived early in their marriage, but they soon returned back to
Cape Breton and expanded their family. There were many
construction projects, James spent a total of twenty-nine years with
the N.S. Dept of Highways as a casual and full-time
employee.
James was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life
and there were many vegetable gardens over the years.
Whatever was caught, grown or baked was always shared amongst the
extended family and to friends. Generosity and making connections with
people were important to him. He loved a good party, hosting
a large family dinner, or attending musical events with old country
tunes with a fiddle / piano was the best. James was an early riser and
there was no sleeping-in on Saturdays for his sons. He
enjoyed repairing items in his shed and harvesting firewood on his
property. His two grandsons spent many hours in the shed working on
projects and it may not be a coincidence one of his sons and both his
grandsons became mechanics. James liked to spoil his daughter and
later his granddaughters. James and Bernice loved their trips to visit
their daughter and her family and bringing back fresh valley
vegetables to make a garden soup.
James was predeceased by his parents, Godfrey and Marie (Mae)
Richard and his loving wife of fifty-three years, Bernice
(MacRae). James and Bernice had three children, James
(Germaine), Stephen (Patti Ann) and Beth Easson (Chris).
James had four grandchildren, Pamela (Ryan Collins), Bailey, Cain and
Makayla and was a great-grandfather to Brooklyn and Sawyer.
He is survived by his siblings, Gladys Feener (Roger), Rose Goyetche
(Jack), Leo Richard (Cathy), Paul Richard and Evelyn
Sartor.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the care and
compassion given to Dad by the staff of the Port Hawkesbury Nursing
Home and by Dr. James Collins.
There will be no visitation. Father Duncan of St. Francis de
Sales Parish. Lower River Inhabitants and Dr. Dale Skinner will
conduct a graveside service in Kempt Road Cemetery 1:30 p.m. Friday,
July 24, 2020. Donations made be made to a charity of one’s
choice. Burial arrangements are under the direction of
