Obituary for
Jacques Joseph Chiasson
JACQUES JOSEPH CHIASSON, beloved husband of Laurie Harkin-Chiasson, passed away on Saturday April 25, 2020, at Winchester Memorial Hospital.
He was taken by non-covid pneumonia. A memorial service will be held at a later date, once the covid19 protocol, allows for gatherings again. A possible electronic gathering may be arranged for the near future, to get all of us through to the real “in-person” memorial. More information to come.
Jacques is survived by his wife Laurie (nee Harkin), father Denis (Isabelle-deceased), sister Suzanne Staples (Mike), brother Gilles (Agnes), nephew Matthew (Jordan), Niece Monique (Christian) & their son Hayden.
Jacques graduated Algonquin College in Physics Technology and retired from General Dynamics, Ottawa, as a systems administrator, with 25 years of service. He was a weaver (Loom) and specialized in “Name draft” weaves. He was almost finished making weaves of all his family members’ names. His physics and maths background melded into weaving, to the point that he devised a PERL script (computer language), to help him plan out his name draft weaving patterns.
He met Laurie at Winchester Airport where he was skydiving (quite a risk-taking hobby). Laurie was flying her aircraft there. Their relationship started with him asking her to go for a ride in her plane…and again the next weekend….and the next….the rest is history.
Though they were not able have children, they loved all their nieces, nephews and god children, as if they were their own. Bless all of them.
Jacques loved WOOD. He loved the smell of new cut wood, he loved to cut it, split it, feel it, stack it, build with it and carve it. Anything made of wood was precious and he was adamant that you should NEVER paint over it. He also loved jig-saw puzzling, many long nights spent in the RV, finishing that special puzzle, just before dawn.
Jacques’ final years saw him slowly deteriorating, mobility-wise, and many other health issues. However, he was always glad to see family and friends and seemed to be very good with children. He always nourished and encouraged them, in any interest, they may have developed.
His best friend Bill Monnon, introduced them to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He fell in love with Cape Breton and thanks to an RV, they were able to spend many summers parked by the ocean, in total bliss. Most summers joined by Bill, Suzanne and family as well. He was able to explore his Acadian roots, in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
Jacques didn’t have pets growing up, so marrying a country girl with a 1500 pound horse was a really big leap for him. His mom gave him advice early on in the relationship. “If you love this girl, you are going to have to live in the country and learn to love the horse”. He did get over his fear and we had many, many pets that he loved (or learned to love eventually) from dogs, raccoons, cockatiels (a whole breeding operation) to orphan lambs, pigeon and squirrels.
He is loved so much and will be missed immensely.
LOVE YOU JACQUES !!!
